Can anyone ID this flower?

I was told they are imported from Hawaii, it kind of looks like a brom to me, but iv never seen anything like it before.

It's native to a Mediterranean climate, so I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard in California.

i think that proteas require speciific growing conditions in order to bloom.
in Hawaii they are grown at higher elevationd o
the slopes of the volcanos.

I did find 1 person selling small live plants. But from what I can dig up they are hard to keep alive outside of Hawaii and Africa. I would like to have one, but I just don't think my skill level is high enough to keep one alive.
