Re: Growing bamboo from seed?
Given that you are at best a zone 5, I would not suggest growing bamboos from seed as it would take way too long, and they need warmer temperatures to get to maturity.
You could check out the bambooweb forums, but I believe that in your climate, you may need to stick to the absolute hardiest bamboos, or cold hardy clumping varieties ie fargesias. A winter like this one would have killed every species of bamboo to the ground in your climate.

Re: Growing bamboo from seed?
I was thinking about growing bamboo for a long time. It's a great plant and there is a lot of stuff that can be made from bamboo. My uncle manufactures furniture and he has a lot of ideas on how to use this wood. From making shelves to setting up the production of any things like this bamboo toothbrush. I think it could be very profitable and I don't know what stopped me.
