Re: grocerystore ginger root
You'll need a piece with at least one "knot". Loves banana soil. Very invasive -- although your winter would take care of that! I advise a pot or raised bed. Depending on the source, some of the ginger root in the stores is "dead" due to treatment or freezing during shipment. Its a hit-or-miss thing, since the sources change throughout the year.

Yup I stuck it in the banana bed last summer and it grew. :woohoonaner:

Re: grocerystore ginger root
The ones that I have planted, grew. The plant, however, is not really very impressive. There are lots of gingers that are much more attractive.

Re: grocerystore ginger root
I bought some last year and it grew for me. I dug it up this fall. It grew about 5 stems and at the bottom of each stem was a new root growth. I pulled these off the original roots and planted the 5 or so stems in a pot and brought them inside. They all ended up drying up. I read where they always do this in the winter but will grow back. Well I had to see if there was anything left in the soil and sure enough I have 5 small ginger roots I'm saving and will plat them and the original roots in spring. Spring is next week isn't it?

Re: grocerystore ginger root
This is so much fun! I've been robbing the produce section of seed for the last few months. I looked at the ginger and was indeed tempted.
I have planted a lot of bell pepper, papaya ,onion, garlic, green onion, and rooted some basil from the market. I've even planted grape tomatoes from my salads and almost bought some stramatoes just for the seed. Winter is tough for me. Now, if only they had some fresh saffron rhizomes...... |

Saffron is a type of Crocus. You can buy Saffron bulbs from a lot of places, although they are seasonal. Late Summer or early Fall , I believe is the best time to buy them. And they are not expensive. I will post some links to sources. Chong |
