Default Grapefruit..

Well I lost my Rio Red this winter and I looked @ the soil and it became very clear why.. Not enough perlite for a pot..
The Grapefruit below is a Ruby Red and is growing like crazy now that it has warmed up. She has several buds on her now fixing to open. She had a setback her 1st winter and spent most of last summer recovering, but looking healthy now.. I'm just glad she's growing above the graft.. :^)

For colder climes there is an advantage to growing citrus when possible from seed. Otherwise you must protect the graft. Many citrus will grow true to seed. One downside is that fruiting takes more years and I am told disease is more of a threat also.

I already have one sour orange and that's enough, but I wonder one day when I get some hardy citrus maybe graft to it (I have to protect the graft)..
Have to pay attention to the grafting class this fall if Skeet is giving it @ the Annual Gulf Coast Banana Meet.. :^)

You may not know that Darkman was badly flooded during the last big rain that hit Pensacola with I am told water in his home above his floor. His orchard apparently also suffered damage from a "river" of storm water flowing through his place. If you remember the rear of his house is elevated several feet. Water above floor height means more than damage to the rug and normally includes the dry wall and often more. So I do not know about this fall yet. I have not been by Darkman's place and I am relying on what Jose263 had to say on it. I had only some minor erosion in nearby Pace, FL on my driveway.

When Darkman said something about it was previous to the massive rain..

Heck...No I didn't know that hadn't spoken to him in a month or so.

I'll have to give him a call tomorrow and see how he's doing:}

Thanks for the info!

Hi everyone,

I am going to do my best to still have a Fall Gathering at my place. It may not be as visually appealing but the fellowship, information exchange, plants and there was something else......hmmm......oh yeah the food will be great!!!

Just seeing the flood pictures will be worth the price of admission. What's that? Oh sorry I forgot it's still free! My Bananas will be half size since the freeze cut them down but some may have fruit we'll see. I hope to have a flood barrier in place this Summer so maybe if we are not ravaged by a hurricane we will see all of you in the Fall. I hope so.

I'm even further from making it to see you (read: eat superb BBQ until I drop and I can do a hurting on a whole pig--then not eat for weeks) this year but I am so glad to see you posting again and digging out of that terrible, unprecented flooding your area experienced.

I, along with many others, have been very concerned. (Yes, I am nobody you know IRL but I have been anxiously watching for you to return--you're back--perhaps a bit upended but YEAH!)

I'll still be a bit infrequent but I'll definitely recover and I really appreciate everyone's thoughts, well wishes and prayers!!!

I relayed the above information to our email group. They have been concerned.
My single ice cream banana survived the winter and after about seven years finally has a pup. I hope to see some sort of fruit production this year.
