Michael,

You're growing Costus Speciosus and it should be hardy in your zone in the ground. You might try leaving some out to find out if it will come back. It is reportedly hardy down to zone 8. Most costus can be propogated by cutting the stalk at the ground, cutting off the flower, and then dividing the stalk into several sections. Plant the sections horizontally and new growth will grow up from the joints, similar to suger cane. That's a great looking specimen in your last picture.

That is good news. I have quite a few that I will try that with.

Thanks

Darkman,

You should wait until the spring to try the propogation method I described. You probably don't have enought time left in your growing season.

Most likely. You can cut the whole stalk to the ground, remove all the leaves, make a trench a couple of inches deep and lay the whole stalk in the trench, cover up with dirt. Costus will root from the stalk at the knots(just like sugar cane). It will take the rest of the summer but you should see new growth.
