Re: Giant colocasias
I buy the cheap compost manure from my local Menards it's rought 2bucks a bag and like the milorganite if its mixed deeply enough in the soil you wont really get much of a smell. Milorganite does really smell unless its kept covered. I used to use Miracle grow but burned my plants a couple of times so I cut back on that and now sparingly use the miracle grow pellets so as not to burn the plants but only every other month or so. Hope this helps

Re: Giant colocasias
I can't say yet as to if the Tub/bucket method works- I'm doing it in a dark garage, but I have also over wintered small EE's in jars in the windowsill and they've done fine.
Right now I have 3 Thai Giants, 2 Xanthosomas, 1 Jack's Giant All in 5 Gallon buckets and a large Rubber-maid tube, plus a couple Black Majic, and others in smaller "Ice Cream" containers. They are all firm and not rotting so far...even putting out a few small pale leaves.

Re: Giant colocasias
Garage is unheated but probably doesn't get be low freezing- I'm in SC and we've had a mild winter. The underground part of the plants is completely under. I've changed the water once, and I take off older leaf parts as they die and get mushy.

Re: Giant colocasias

RE: Show us your Colocasia 'Thailand Giant'! (pic) clip this post email this post what is this? see most clipped and recent clippings • Posted by dave_in_nova VA zone 7a (My Page) on Fri, Aug 6, 10 at 15:04 eric, In October or early November, I dig the plants, cut off all leaves, forcefully spray the rootball with a hose to remove as much soil as I can. Plop them in about 6" of water in a large bucket (approx 4 gallon). Store them in garage where it's above freezing, but cool, and I give them a bit of light (flourescent). Water needs to be changed initially, maybe every week or so for about a month, and any rotted plant tissue discarded. Eventually water remains fresh and plant tissues don't die. More roots form. Here's what the plants look like in the Spring (these are 'Black Magic'). You can see the robust root system. Plants take off quickly in Spring:

Re: Giant colocasias
wow..im really pleased that most of my EE's survived overwintering
even my "troublesome" thai giants.. last yr..they didnt get HUGE like yrs prior..i do think i underfertilized..and i also got a TON of pups.. LOL..i ususally have to buy a few missing types to fill in what i want for my gardens.. not this yr.. this yr overwintering..i used a soil mix of coir, shredded leaves..and buried the plants roots big and small pups.. i have 7 big boxes/pots holding them.. i ran out of big pots.thus the big boxes (which did hold up pretty good) i think im going to plant out some of the pups in the open vegy garden too and see how they do.. i just have to remember to water them.. LOL |

Re: Giant colocasias
I bought a little Thai Giant for $4 yesterday...so I'll go ahead and plant it in a wetter area with plans for digging it up and trying the bucket method next year. It worked on Siam Ruby in the garage last winter.

Re: Giant colocasias
I've never been able to grow the xanthoma that good for some reason. But there's a guy in Foley that has some that are huge, he also has an irrication system. But I do ok with the Thai Giant, check out my avatar pic.
