First loquat to sprout
 

I planted 80 loquat seeds but only a few made it. This one was the first to sprout and its opening up more and more. I've never been really successful growing plants from seeds but I'm so happy that I got at least a few loquat trees to sprout. I'll keep posting updated pictures. Hopefully they will flourish. It took about a month for them to germinate.

Soon you're going to have about 80 plant's I'd bet and be giving them away!:woohoonaner:

Hi Bob,
Unfortunately 70 of them molded. I guess I didnt plant them soon enough. But I think I'll at least have 8 or 9 trees possibly. I have one that's about 5 feet tall and I cant wait until it fruits so I can collect more seeds. It was only a few inches tall when i got it.

I grew about a dozen... from seed from a member here from Texas and kept two. .... then sent the rest to another member....in Texas!:ha: At least there they're hardy. Mine grew to about 20" this year and I dug and brought them in. In a year or two I'll try planting them close to a foundation and wrapping for winter protection them like lots of people do with figs here.

LOL wow. I got mine from a friend that lives near me. She has a giant one in her backyard and its flowering right now. I think she hers for over 20 years. I hope you have success with wrapping them. I kept mine outside all winter in a container. its survived ice storms and snowfall. Its become my favorite fruit tree

Cameron, when your plant is a yr or 2, get a dormant branch of your friends tree & graft it onto your tree so you can get fruits much sooner.
Bob, same to you (hey, I didn't see that tree at your house!) I bring all my potted trees inside...the figs lose their leaves & go dormant but the loquat doesn't lose any leaves & grows slowly over winter.
I planted very fresh seeds in March 06 & the tree is about 8ft but no fruits yet except for a stick I grafted on of Big Jim has a bunch of baby fruits on!!

If you are trying to sprout them outdoors, the rest might sprout when the soil temperature returns to the 70's F in the days and nights. Loquats do not sprout "true to type", so the seedlings are used as rootstock for a proven cultivar.

Thanks Patty. I've never had experience with grafting trees. I'll ask my friend if I could take a dormant branch. That would be so neat to have it fruiting earlier. I'll do some research on the steps for grafting. Thanks again Patty

Hi Richard. I have the ones that survived in a make shift greenhouse. which is a plastic cake holder from the grocery store. I have them in full sun and I add a little water to raise the humidity. The temperature outside have been in the 80s but the night time temps have been in the 50s. So I really do need to find another branch to graft onto the rootstock. I'll have to read up on that. Not to derail the thread, but Bob, what variety of fig are the folks growing outside in Jersey? We tried Brown Turkey in Westchester, and you had to wrap it with burlap. Thinking also about Celeste and Chicago Hardy.

Not to derail this either but I'm growing one fig that came with the house that I assume is Brown turkey and have never protected it but am going to this winter to see if it bears bettter fruit next year> I started fertilizing and giving it better watering this year and it bore the most and biggest fruit ever. I just got one var. "Sucrette" this year from Pitangadiego when I was there and it's now a 6 ft. tall shrub from a 6" plant in March and bearing lot's of fruit I doubt will ripen.
Celeste is the other one grown by everyone here and Chicago Hardy is the other I would have chosen if I were going to get another. Jon picked the Sucrette for me based on taste and hardiness.

Wow Tony, that is gorgeous! One of my friends has one in bloom right now. I thought they bloomed in winter? I have a larger loquat that is about 2-3 years old and its 5 feet. This one was from another friend.

I've plant lots of Loquat seed pretty much all germinated. Some just take longer than others so don't give up on them.

Thanks Tony. I have 4 pots with maybe 3 seeds in each pot so I'm hoping they all sprout. They are all still green so thats a good sign, unlike the others that turned brown and molded

Do U need to graft them for better fruiting same as Avocado for example?
I dont have any and I might try.
