Today, I cut back everything in the sideyard due to the frost last night. Hate this time of year, but what can you do???? Most plants in the sideyard were aroids, angel trumpets, gingers, and a few bananas along with a few small palms. The pool area will be done another day. The basjoo and most everything else did not have much damage. Anyway, thought I would post the after pics.... What a sad day...
Here are a few pics of what it looked like before the big "cut"!!: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And hear is what it looks like as of today: ![]() ![]() ![]() It still amazes me how small of an area it is when everything is cut down. I would have thought it would have looked bigger with everything gone. Also amazes me how many plants you can pack into such a small area and they all do well!!! Randy, it's one of my least favorite times of the year. Looking at the amazing growth we always get during the summer, it's sad to know that just one night of cold weather can take it all away. Our low has been 36*F so far with no frost at my place, but I know the plants can't hold on too much longer. I am preparing to dig my nonhardy bananas and subtropicals soon and will continue to take in the last breaths of summer with my hardy types until old man winter take them away.

I feel for you guys. Even where I live in Houston I get enough frosts to burn most all of the leaves off of my bananas and kill back the aroids, gingers, cannas, heliconias, etc. I guess I still have it easier than you all but our growing season is coming to an end here as well. I'll have another month or so if I'm lucky but I can tell some things are really starting to turn yellow and slow their growth alot.

How sad. I donot like winter myself. At least I can leave out my cannas. I beleve my bananas too. Allot of people here have big giant banana plants. I think I can leave some of my bigger ones in the ground. My DCs I had for two years always stayed on the patio in a pot they did fine. There in the ground now I think they will be ok. Will see.
Makes me want to move to a tropical island. |

I love the Fall, but I hate having to bring in everything. I just need to move to south FL!! Did I see some ginger mixed into your jungle Randy? I have no luck with blooms here just greenery. So what will you do just mulch heavily? I always bring all of mine in, we can get cold blasts out of Canada so I don't take any chances.
Michael

I have about 5 different types of hedychiums and they all bloomed for me this year. Last couple of years my Dr. Moy did not bloom, but it joined in this year!!! They overwinter for me nicely with just my usual 3-4" of mulch. Also have several different types of curcumas and they overwinter well for me also... Not sure what type you have, but you may want try to leave a piece or two out to try with heavy mulch... |

Well, just be glad you don't live in Zone 5 and have to dig all that up!

Randy,
Most of mine are pinecone ginger, and I have one that I was told it was peruvian ginger that came from Hawaii. I have never thought to leave it out because this is a zone 6. Do you really think it might have a chance here?? Michael

I, personally, have not tried pinecone ginger (costus) as of yet, but don't believe they would where you live. I assumed, which is my fault, you had hedychiums. They would probably do fine for you with lots of mulch, but the costus... I think you would be pushing it a bit, but you won't know til you try!!! If you have quite a few, leave one out and see what happens, then let me know!!!! Here's to a mild winter!!!! ![]() |

Just to be clear, I don't have to dig up my cannas, the frost just usually burns them back a bit. In fact, they will sometimes bloom a bit even during the winter here. I was just trying to get across the fact that even in the Houston area, we are not unaffected by the occasional frost during winter. In fact, if I don't protect my Dwarf Cavendish it usually will turn pretty mushy-they are just total wimps when it comes to cold. On the other hand, I never protect my Orinoco, my Musella lasiocarpa, and several other of the ornamental species.

Here in a zone 6 we have been having canna return the following year. Anymore our winters are much milder that we would get when I was a child. (70's and 80's)

Mike,
I grew up in Western KY and we had to dig our cannas when I was kid if we wanted any for next year as well. Occasionally we would leave some-sometimes they came back but often they did not. |

The only canna that I have had return each spring is Yellow King Humbert. It also is right in front of the house, so there is the heat from the foundation to help. Any other canna throughout my yard never make it (even with thick straw mulch of 3-4 inches) unless I dig up the corms.

Great yard. Its sad to see it all gone, but It probably gives you more ideas for next year. Alot of my plants are inside now (Still slowly dragging some more in), but Im already getting Ideas for next year. I hope to get some of the bananas I have in pots into the ground because I find that they grow much taller and faster if planted in the ground than if they are planted in a pot.
