Einkorn Wheat
 

My Einkorn wheat that I planted in early October is flowering. I think that is what you might call it anyway.

This is my first year growing grain so I am sure yields will not be the best. I am also growing oats but could not upload the picture for some reason.

other than for historical purposes do have any other reasons or interests in growing the ancient Einkorn wheat.

Yes actually, as a food crop but this is year one so I am just learning. It has higher mineral content, more protein (16%-22%), and more beta carotene and grows in tougher conditions than modern wheat.

Most importantly my Sister and her son both have celiac so they are allergic to the gliadin protein that is in modern wheat. Initial testing showed that people with celiac did not react to the gliadin protein in einkorn. So more testing is needed to make sure it is safe for all people with celiac. My sister and her son both tried bread I made from it and they had no reaction at all.

So I am practicing growing einkorn for when my wife and I buy a piece of land. Then we will grow it for the family. Plus it is just fun, I love growing what I eat.

Before you answered I did look it up; apparently it provokes fewer allergic reactions in susceptible people. It will grow well on marginal land and it is still grown today so it must have something going for it. Fortunately I have no known allergies because I have so many more projects that I want to do and can not due to time and I can get buy with cheaper store purchased bread.

Yep I have no know allergies either. I found out about it researching for my nephew and my sister. I think most of us would stick to store bought so no hard feelings here:) Eating a wheat free diet is very expensive so growing this may even be breaking even for our family HA.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm thinking about growing Einkorn. How do I determine the best time to plant in my area? Do you plant at the same time as other winter wheat?

I planted mine for winter growth because that is when it rains here and that is when the grass grows in the hills. I cannot say when it would be best for you as I am not an expert in growing wheat. I just know when the grass does grow around here, so I planted accordingly.
