I've seen them being sold in Chinatown. They smell like rotting cheese and dirty feet.

They taste great...and smell terrible. In some countries it's illegal to eat them in a public place.

Would love to try to grow one though!

In Honolulu durians can be bought in Chinatown markets. You might want to try one before commiting to growing.

Not everybody has the taste buds for them. I assumed I would like them but it is like being color blind for me. Friends who love durians can hand me a bite that is supposedly delicious and to me it is just moist flavorless fruit. Not bad, just nothing. I didn't "get" the smell either, and there is a lot of variety in responses to that, too.

I thought the fruit was pretty good, although mild. I understand there are several different varieties so maybe some are stronger than others?

They look very bizarre to me. The outside smell described by others may be enough to deter me from trying one.

I would kinda like to try it. They sell them at my local asian market, but I don't have the courage to buy an ENTIRE fruit just to sample it (with the risk that I will not like it).

My husband and I bought a chunk of durian when we were visiting Bangkok. We knew its reputation, but we're always interested in trying exotic fruits and vegetables. Neither of us enjoyed it, so we ended up carrying the leftover portion in a backpack all day... in 107° heat. When we eventually opened the backpack, the smell nearly knocked us over. Let's just say durian seems to be an acquired taste.

Oh, we're way too frugal for that -- plus we really needed the backpack. The durian was in a package, so the fruit itself hadn't made contact with the backpack (which still wouldn't have been a major crisis in my life).

I'm guessing durian is kind of like garlic: it may be a perfectly fine ingredient in some foods (e.g., soup), but most of us don't want to eat it plain.
