Wow, I like the looks of that plant! Robert, could you tell me a bit about it? I Googled it, but came up with not even one hit. Perhaps it is misspelled? Thanks,

Frank

Re: Drimia Macalata

I think the correct name is Drimiopsis maculata. I have had this for years and its quite common here in North Florida, not rare at all. Its a South African bulb. I have it naturalized in my yard, its hardy in zone 8B-9A. Goes dormant in winter then comes back like gangbusters in Spring.

It also goes by the name "Speckled Lily". There are a few different species in widespread cultivation here in the USA. This one, and one that has longer leaves and less spotting are available at box stores sometimes. It has also been "passed off" sometimes as a Bonsai plant (in reality, it is a dwarf lily and never gets bigger than about 7-8" tall at the most)

Sorry, don't mean this the way it sounded, not trying to dispute the "rare" claim. Its probably a regional thing. It may be rare in some spots, not rare in others.

Thank you, Lilith & Richard for your insight and additional information on these plants. They were sent to me on a trade from Illinois Botanical Garden located in New Berlin. The plant tags were severely damaged, but I knew one of you would set the record straight. My expertise is cycadacae, but my love of aroids and other plants continuously takes me in different directions. chumleyrobert@hotmail.c
