Digging up a Bird of Paradise for winter possible?

I have a white Bird of Paradise in a pot in my sun room and I was wondering if you could do the "putting the bananas to sleep for the winter thing" (http://www.bananas.org/f15/time-put-...inter-310.html)
with other plants that are Banana-ish?
Since the BOP's get pretty big, would it be possible to dig them up, cut the leaves, put them in a cool garage, and then replant the following season?
Could it work with a plant like a "traveler's palm"?

I can say one thing palms rooting is over a growing period is very good. I would wish you a ton of luck getting the travelers palms out the ground. Now the WBP I would keep in a pot no matter how much you would like to have it in the ground just due to its invasive roots, and suckering. I'd dig a hole and set the pot in to make it look like you have it in the ground (no matter the pot size you upsize it to). Good Luck :^)

I forgot to mention...I'm in zone 8 right near the zone 7 line, so I doubt that the WBOP's suckers or roots would survive the winter. I was wondering because I've seen HUGE bird or Paradise and I know that will never be possible in a pot.
I know a traverler's palm would be hard because after a point, they'd be just too massive to move or store.
