I was thinking red this year too. I've started nostrums, coleus, caladiums, hardy hibiscus. Got some red sunflower seeds, red cannas, and trying to get those darn Brugmansi sanguinea seeds to sprout. I did get a brug that is kinda red but I looked at so many things at the nursery I don't remember what the mother plant blooms exactly looked like. I saw a picture of cannas with red leaves that were really nice. It wasn't Tropicana but a darker red like your going with. I'll try to find it and post it here. I did get a few white things too just to contrast. Guess its gonna like like peppermint candy.

Found it! Its the Canna Australia. I had seen it at the Chocolate Flower Farm. They have lots of ideas on the dark red plants.

Plumeria are very easy to grow. They have a natural dormant period during the winter months and don't need any water or sun. Great for the tropical look.

You should also look at Alocasia 'Black Beauty' and other dark, shiny aroids. They'll need to be brought in for the winter, like any bulb, but talk about striking purple-black foliage!

Canna 'Red Futurity' is also a great one (similar to 'Austria' or 'Australia', whichever it is). Has dark leaves and a beautiful red flower.

Hey Just J, I just recieved my first 3 Plumeria's from Thailand today. I got the Wah Gor, Rim Fire, and Danai Delight. I just potted them in pots starting with a layer of Pea Gravel on the bottom, Half Perlite and Top soil, and polished off on the top with more Pea Gravel. I used root starteron them and planted them 4 inches deep....any other suggestions for me?

just j 05-15-2009 09:23 PM

Re: dark red kick

make sure that the pea gravel on top dont touch the cutting when the sun beats down on it all day it makes those little stone very hot dont water it until it roots and dont pull it out of the pot to check if its rooting there super easy to grow u will know in like a month that ist is starting to root when its not tipsy in the pot the roots are fragile when they first start growing it will put out a few leaves and could even flower before it has a nice root system let me know about those wah gors i wanted to order one from the guy on ebay how big is it when it flower be sure to post some pictures i like to see if its darker or lighter color than mine if its darker almost black i will have to get a few from him i like the dark colored plants cant ever have enough

I'll take a pic tommorrow and post to here. Thanks for the 4 gravel tip because I have it touching right now. I will move from around the base tommorrow. It is about 8-10 inches long and about 1.5 inches wide.
