Beautiful plant. I grew one for a while last year until it just rotted away. I had it in shade as they really seem to burn in the sun. Won't take the cold well either from what I've heard.

They are more cold hardy than you think. And you're right Brent, they do much better in shade. I've grown this plant for 5 years in the ground under an oak canopy surrounded by fairly bushy azaleas. The leaves will burn at 25 or 26 but shows no cold damage at 27 or 28. It has bloomed 3 out of the 5 years I've grown it. Hopefully, it will bloom this year since we had a relatively mild winter.

I have one of htose. The color is amazing! Thanks for the hardiness info, mine came into the greenhouse before the freezes started this winter. I can't wait to see if it blooms.

I have one and they are beautiful. It seems to keep growing fast and needs to be potted up often.
I keep it in afternoon shade because otherwise the white parts get brown and crispy on the ends. It likes to stay moist. It seems pretty resilient to pests and other diseases and is pretty easy as long as it gets shade and some water every few days. During the winter I let it dry out quite a bit and kept it in the garage on the really cold nights (20's F). |
