Colocasia Gigantea Thailand Giant Strain bulb

Just dug this one up. It's my biggest one. Last year it was over 11 feet tall with leaves 7 feet long. This year because of the cold May and June it didn't do as well. This plant is so sensitive to temperatures and amount or water-the roots rot off so easily. I have a lot of difficulty overwintering them in pots as the roots rot off in the coolish winter temps so this winter I'm not even bothering. All of them get put in bags of peat and I'll hope the tubers don't rot. This one weighs about 5lbs or so.

Good size.. thanks for sharing...When you store the bulb, do you keep the peat moss wet or dry?

Sure! I debated about that. I kept it dry because I was afraid of rot. This one already has some on the bottom-if you look close you might be able to see it. I baked it in the sun for a couple days and put hydrogen peroxide on the area. I'm afraid I might lose it this winter regardless. I suppose wetting it is ok too-too dry and dry rot can set in on colocasia bulbs. But in the past I kept it in a pot in dry potting soil so I think dry peat will work. However I had the old leaf sheaths to protect the outside of the tuber-now they aren't there to shield the tuber. I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway!

ha! It did last year. Huge flowers nonstop all year long. I rough estimated I had over 10,000 seeds. They still pop up in pots, trays-everywhere to this day. This year the flowers weren't as big so there weren't really any seeds.

A couple pics of the tuber with leaves. 11 ft tall from base to the tip of the leaf. Longest leaf just fell shy of 7 ft. Base was almost a foot across. This is what it does when it is really happy:

Yeah, mine didn't do that like it did last year. Musta been all the crazy weather all over the US or something. Normally, though, they're VERY prolific!!

Thanks for the reassurance. I thought I did something wrong. Like you said they flowered in the past like crazy. This year were bad, and few of them. I thnk it was the weather. Out May and June here were cold, last year we had a great Sping and I was able to get off to an early start.

Hey Eric, for a while now i'm surching for the thailand giant. I live in the Netherlands and the Thai Giant is not to get in Europe. Seller on ebay only ship within the US. The question... did you get seeds this year, and are you willing to ship some across the ocean. I'll pay for the fees of course:)

Thanks, Henk

I take care of my elderly grandmother 24/7 in my home, and this year has been quite rough..... I don't think I've even been to the area of my yard and forced my way through the bed where they are planted (way up in the middle) but maybe 2 or 3 times. :-( I was just telling someone yesterday how I feel like I lost an entire year's worth of gardening this year. I know I still have them pop up in various pots of other plants, but I don't even know if any of my plants seeded this year. Last year my largest one did, and they came up EVERYWHERE! For me, after having grown a million different varieties of elephant ears, I think that the Thailand Giant is one of the more difficult ones to grow here in our area. Seems very susceptible for the bulb to rot and then the whole plant just falls over. All the other elephant ears around it can take all the water that is poured at them, but these seem to like to be kept drier. Maybe it's because of our humidity that is factored in here in the Southeast. If I had seeds, though, I'd be more than happy to give them to you!

Seeds are not important now, Grandmother is. Spend your time with her the best you can and you will reward yourself greatly.
Thanks and take care.

This one of my favorite plants. This is my first year and it did bloom.

How cold hardy are these if I mulch?
