![]() we have a thread on here about coconut trees, you might want to read it before you spend your money. it would probably be advisable to get one already started. there is very good advise on there. thats why i havent gotten one yet. if you have zone issues like i do, research it before you get it.

![]() LOL you need a temp of 30 - 35 C daily , they need 12 - 18 hours of sunlight each day and they drink water thats on 20 degree's C.
they can't survive temp fluctations , 10 C fluctation = kill o yes and the roots are deeeep and huge, its almost impossible to have it indoors when its a few years old, even in a 200 litre. its only for zone 11 and higher, the grow will always stunt if you grow in colder zones, alot coconut nucifera will stunt at 20 C i had one that was a few years old and i gave up --too big, i planted it in the garden becuase it was so badly rootbound while it was in a very big pot. so i had no choice to plant it in the garden , it died in the summer at 28 C we had no sunlight for 3 weeks here in the netherlands zone 7a - 8b NOT MENTIONING THE RISK OF COCONUT ON YOUR HEADS

![]() I tried it a few years back and after spending a lot and taking care of it like a baby it becomes and looked like a baby with a cancer, loosing and wilting browned yellow leaves, the trunk was weak, the leaves droop, and after a while I gave up and threw it in the dust bin after it looked like a petrified mummified king tot.
I live in zone 9.

![]() If you have a greenhouse, you can grow one for a while in zone 9, before it gets too big for your greenhouse. Then you have to sacrifice it.
They need at least zone 10A and that may be dicy. They do better in 10B and higher (ie, the true tropics) I actually have one, its about 6 ft tall, and I am going to donate it to a friend who is planting an experimental garden at the University here. We are zone 9A. I know it won't make it, but, he wants to try, and it cost me less than $15 here at Walmart, so its no great loss.

![]() Good luck and I wish your friend success.
If you can let us know the outcome. A lot of people are wishing it can be done. I am one of them. But of course it will take time. But seeing them grow everyday as in a tropical scenery is a bonus that you can't buy.

![]() I don't know if they treat store coconuts to extend their shelf life - does anyone know? I know they pasteurise dates which is why date pits don't grow. Would a store coconut sprout if you kept it hot and damp? Perhaps they have been too cold in transport.
