Default Cherimoya

Cherimoya - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Honeyhart- was developed in Orange County California in the 1930’s. This variety has medium to large sized fruits with a yellowish green skin. This variety is best for making drinks as it has extremely juicy almost gelatinous flesh with a sweet syrupy flavor.

Nice! I can't wait til I get myself some Annonas. I've got the similar Pawpaw, but, I'm not in Cali or anywhere similar, so, I have to spend quite some $$ just to get some shipped. Growing isn't hard though for me.

Maybe you need to thin them out a bit?
I love cherimoyas, bought 18 lbs last month, so yummy. I have an atemoya and a Fino de Jete cherimoya. I hand pollinate and have several small fruits on them. Is yours in a container?

Has anybody ever researched the neurotoxic alkaloids in Cherimoya's? Annonacin is related to Parkinson's. The occasional fruit might be OK, but 18 pounds seems that you are playing with your health.

The way I usually see it, the problem lies in the fact that some people seem to use the leaves for tea, which, the toxin is most concentrated in as well as the seeds. I'd imagine that eating the fruit is safer, and eating less Soursop than most other Annonas is also safer. It's a good thing my obsession is more on Pawpaws and Rollinias.

Relation is not relevant. For example, Niacin is related to nicotine (in cigarettes) and Nicotine can be oxidised to nicotinic acid (niacin) Oh, you can get pellagra by not having enough niacin (B3)

But your question may be easy to answer. If researchers went to several annona plantations to document a possible very local rise in incidence of Parkinsons... then ask parkinsons patients if they consumed a lot of annona. Since annona are relatively uncommon fruits it should be relatively easy to correlate these two data points into something tangible.

Anyway...

Anona are being investigated for cancer related therapies, but Carambola can be detrimental to people with kidney problems, then again coffee is suspected to slow the onset of or make one immune to alzheimers, and hot peppers in Mexico are thought to prevent cancer of the stomach and GI tract. Then there's red yeast rice (and niacin) with strong evidence to lower cholesterol. And of course all those bananas and other sweet fruits HAVE to put weight on you, leading to...

I think it's about time we slow down looking for excuses to not have something in a diet or eating a magic bullet for prevention of disease. Eat what's good. Even a whopper on occasion :-)
