im in zone 6/7 and this is my first time growing them. i have noticed that they do not like full sun( as of now) everytime i set their pot in the sun the leaves wrinkle a little. so i guess im gonna have to move them slowly into the sun. any ideas yall???? i really love the formation of the leaves. has anyone noticed that they "almost" look like pot leaves? i thought it was quite funny when the true leaves started coming out and was like....uuuuummmmmm.

We have ours planted right next to the house on the west side. We also have a soaker hose next to the house so they're doing great. They get several hours of west sun but not mid-day sun. I've seen them out in the open in Mexico.

i've a question, why do people plant castor beans? i've heard they are poisonous, so i would think them more of a liability is say you had a kid on the street wander into your yard and eat some, or an animal come in and eat some and die. just wondering, i'm not sure exactly how potent they are.

i put a divider fence up between my yard and my neighbors yard. then i posted it no trespassing. then i told my neighbor( ive told him before a million times to keep his kids out of my yard) that i was gonna plant poisioness plants right on the hill by the fence. i also told him being my property is now posted if his children get into my plants on my side of the yard and they got sick it would be his fault for no watching and keeping control of his children. and that he would be liable for damages done to my "private property", and that he would REPLACE EVERYTHING his children killed or damaged. last summer (his kids are 6 and 7)they were in my yard and trampled and killed roses, daylilies, and hard to find tulips. then they would throw their dads beer bottles i my yard and into my flower beds. i got tired of being the nice gardner, and neighbor, especially when it was costing me money. i want to plant whatever i want in my yard and not have to worry if its poison and the neighbors kids. so i told him the next time, i will call the law and being my yard is posted, i am covered by the law and not liable for what happens to his children. heck if i didnt have outside cats to worry about i would plant monkshod! oh how lovely they are!!!!

actually , my cat ate alot of weird stuff.

poisonus agaves , sorghum bicolor which contains certain levels of cyanide, tulips, leaves from my basjoo canna's and trachycarpus .F.
i would not be worried about animals because my cat didn't fastfooded on it and left ricinus alone.

it seems that alot of humans are stupid enough to eat it , i would not be responsible for someone that's dumb to eat my plants in my yard.

actually did you know that about 70 % of the plants in a common garden are poisonus to humans when swallowed ?

yes, and did you know that most of the poisoness plants are among some of the most beautiful. have you ever seen monkshod? it is one of the most beautiful plants(my opinion) i have ever seen. i wont have it in my yard because of my outside cats(even if the rub against it it could make them sick cause cats lick themselves) but maybe one day i will. i want some oleander too. the foilage is awesome to look at. btw: if a small child eats a castor bean seed it could kill them, if an adult ate them it would make them seriously sick.

Castor beans grow out in the full sun here with no problems with the heat. They seed everywhere - we threw out the last one nearly 2 years ago and new plants are still germinating all over the place - a real nuisance imho.

A framer couple miles from us planted few several years ago, now when they come up he chops down all but 1 or 2. In the fall he cuts them down with hand saw as they get that thick of trunk and not to hit them with mower!

when our winters are mild the seeds will surive it outside but even the last winter wasn't mild enough.

they love heat, Ive seen them in turkey, growing great with day temperatures between 35 and 45 degrees.
