Bonsai
Here is my first attempt at a true bonsai using a variegated bougainvillea.
This is my bonsai planter from a bonsai that I bought and killed. One of those ignorant ones with the glued rocks! Before trimming: Trimmed long branch off: I did trim the roots a little before putting in the pot, I just didn't take any shots of it. It looks pretty cute right now, but we'll see how it does. I may try my hand at a couple other things too. It was kind of fun giving it a try! Jordan and everyone, feel free to post here with your bonsai projects or established bonsai! I would love to see your pictures!!! ~JaNan

Re: Bonsai
I actually don't have any established bonsai yet
Here is the umbrella tree I am working on now: I cut it back to make it branch a week or so ago. It is actually showing some signs of new growth (bulges coming around top of it where I cut it) It didn't have any branches at all so I had to cut it to make it branch. In a couple weeks it is going in my bonsai pot. Then I am putting it in this pot: Very nice plant Hope it does well for you. I am hoping to get a pre-bonsai like what you did and try it that way. I am also going to be doing some cherry trees form seed if I ever get them in the mail

Re: Bonsai
Hi Janan:
I used to play around alot with Bonsai, they can be so beautiful. One suggestion for you though.............It looks as though there are no drainage holes in your container? You will run into big problems especially with a Boug. Its very important that they are grown in a well drained soil, watered often, and be in a container that will drain off the excess water quickly. Here's another tip for you once it has grown and is fairly established; If you want Bougs to flower, feed them heavy with Chelated Iron when you water, if you do this they will produce flowers non stop. Bougs dont like to be kept wet or even moist, grow them like a cactus in full sun and this will also force blooms as well as being rootbound. |

Re: Bonsai
Thanks Stephen! You are right it does not have any drain holes in it. I may have to change the pot. I layered the bottom in Perlite because of that. Not good enough? ~J

Re: Bonsai
Hi,
Oh, I didn't notice there being no holes in your pot... I have been told you can just drill some holes in the bottom, but that doesn't seem like it would be too good on the plants. Maybe a cheaper pot from Bonsaiboy.com would be good if you want to buy a new pot? There's some pretty cheap ones on there and many to choose from Or maybe joebonsai? The perlite on the bottom would give some water a spot to go. But not enough as it wouldn't have anywhere to go after that. And then the bougainvillea will sooner or later get roots there to. Hope all goes well, and have a nice day

Re: Bonsai
Here's a group of six or seven ficus I got to make a bonsai from.
I forgot to order mesh for my umbrella trees drainage holes So it can't be potted until I get them in the mail. I will order the bonsai pot for the ficus, and the mesh for both on Friday. And when I get the stuff in the mail and I pot them I will post some pictures
