Black Pepper

Along with sugarcane, this year I am also hoping to get a black pepper plant. I am not talking about peppers, but the spice. Coming from the peppercorn plant, 4 different kinds of peppercorn can come from the same plant!

It appears easy to care for, just wondering if anyone has tips, experiences, pics, etc.

Hoping to get a new pineapple diaries started;)

Now I just need to buy it:)!

Have you looked at this book? It's got some nice info on growing Black Pepper as well as others indoors. I've not grown it yet but plan to soon.

Re: Black Pepper

@Illia: How ironic! It was this book that got me interested in black pepper, pineapples, and sugarcane in the first place. I LOVE this book! One of my faves and super useful. I will get the black pepper plant from the authors of this book - Logee's Tropical Plants. They have every plant they mention in the book and thousands more. I also get their email offers. They seem like a great source for everything! Here's their website: Logee's Greenhouses - Plants For Home & Garden - Fruiting, Rare and Tropical Plants. This is the plant I will buy: Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)-Logee's Greenhouses.

I have quoted this book in a lot of my posts. I have put several in my thread, The Pineapple Diaries.

Re: Black Pepper

I tried black pepper and they died from cold weather. It may have been something else, I really do not know. I would still suggest you give it a try. My Aunt lives in South Florida and she told me the first year she got peppercorns then second year they were all over the ground and now on the third year she has stopped collecting the peppercorn's unless she is out because the vine is producing so much.

Re: Black Pepper

As a future reference though, most of Logee's stuff is really expensive for some awfully tiny little plants, I'd highly recommend researching. I believe their black pepper isn't bad, but especially things like cinnamon, mangoes, bananas, sapodilla, papayas, and citrus - There's much better deals elsewhere.

A friend passed over some peppercorns that they had grown themselves - on a vine? They had processed? them themselves and the peppercorns were so hard that the pepper grinder couldn't cope.

Pine Island Nursery is one I'm majorly eyeing as a source for most of my tropicals.

I know shipping is really really heavy, but in the total price it's cheaper than Top Tropicals for me.

Re: Black Pepper

Thank you everybody! I know their prices are expensive, but they have a good deal for their small plants. As worm farmer said: "My Aunt lives in South Florida and she told me the first year she got peppercorns then second year they were all over the ground and now on the third year she has stopped collecting the peppercorn's unless she is out because the vine is producing so much." I think it will be worth it! I'll let u guys know when I get it and when I order it.

Thanks,
Kbud
