Next year I want to make a privacy screen. I was wondering if anyone knew of any reputable online nurseries that sold bamboo rhizomes. I want to avoid ebay. Thanks.

I've never bought the stuff. I have found that if you put an add up on craigslist people will let you come dig it up. Saves them the work of controlling it themselves.

Thanks, that's a good idea. I will just have to keep an eye on it. Ive seen alot people grow it around here

You wouldn't want to get small pieces that could be sent mail order. You'd want larger plant pieces that will grow faster for you. Don't even try to get them mail order, get them locally.

Thanks Sandy. I've looked around online to see if anyone locally has any. I have seen a few people around here that grow it but its just small clumps. I also posted an ad on craigslist to see if anyone in this area needed someone to dig some up to keep it under control

Do you want clumping Bamboo or one that spreads. I have been looking for a variety that clumps without spreading too much and grows between 10-15 feet tall. Any one have ideas on which one will fit that description?

I don't think you would want rhizomes because I'm a bamboo collector and I've taken rhizomes before. Those guys take like 2 years to establish and actually put out their own rhizomes. They basically take forever to grow. I'm an ebay seller myself specializing in mostly moso, heteroclada, bissetii, rufa, nuda, parvifolia, and a few others I can't think of right now, but I sell established plants that I know will do well so not all ebay sellers sell crap.

I think bamboo nursery in Oregon might be you best bet in getting a dependable plant where they actually respond to you and make sure you are satisfied.

Thanks Steve. Your bamboo plants are beautiful! I found one website called bamboogarden in they are in Oregon. I may try getting a few of the cheaper bamboo next year.

Check Plant Delights Nursery at Juniper Level Botanic Garden located in N. Carolina. They only have a few bamboo but I've never had a problem ordering other plants from them over the last 10 yrs.

If you find a place to did it be, sure the roots do not dry, as it will die if thy do.

we have a saying about bamboo here:

The first year it sleeps,
The second year it creeps,
The third year it leaps.

Thanks George. I looked at a couple of nurseries around here and they didnt sell it, so maybe next year i ll be able to get some

I sold some to a guy on craigslist. I let him dig whatever Phyllostachys nigra 'Henonis' that he wanted for $25. I've sent some through the mail, but yes, that would be much smaller sizes. Don't buy from Plant Delights unless you will be happy with very small, overpriced plants. If you want a clumper that gets between 10-15' try a Fargesia. There are a few species but rufa and robusta come to mind. A larger cold hardy clumper is Borinda yunnanensis. They can take cold and even my small plants in pots did fine with our last, hot summer. If you can't find any locally for a good price I do have a few varieties I'll sell cheap, but the kicker will be the shipping costs. You'd do much better to find someone locally with a grove to get a good price. If you want you can email me at robgarren@hotmail.com

Thanks I'll send you an email. I would love to grow black bamboo or anything that can take the heat. I'm going to have to wait until next year.

Wow Dean I would love to grow some clumping type since they are easier to keep under control. You have a nice plant there.
