The University of Hawaii has very good quality seeds for $1 per package.
I have some low bearing solo varieties growing: Sunrise, Sunset and Waimanalo - x77.

Seeds from home grown fruit generally won't come true.

I planted U of Hawaii Waimanalo X77 - low bearing. This is a great tasting papaya.

Logees has a small dwarf plant. Need something small.

They have "Red Lady" and "Tainung" available, none are dwarf if you do some research other than Logee website claims. ;)
I have never ordered from them myself but have read some questionable reviews.
Keep in mind that Papaya plants do not transplant easily, so you might be better off with a reliable seed source. Mine sprouted and grew fast.
And $25 for a 4"seedling in a pot plus sh/handling (Logees) is a joke IMO.

I'm not sure why home grown papaya seeds would be any different than farm grown, or university grown...as far as growing true.

The U of Hawaii seeds are the best deal in town. Instead of $5-7 for 5 seeds on eBay, for $1 you get about 50 seeds. And they always germinate well. They charge $.50-1.00 for shippng and handling on each order.

When I want Maridol seeds I go to a Whole Foods market and buy the funkiest looking Maridol fruit ($3-5) and get 50+ seeds, and they germinate quickly. The Maridol is supposed to bear low on the plant, but I'm not sure how tall it grows. You can always cut the top off and force the plant to branch and grow low.

Assuming that's a plant and not a 4 foot long fruit, that's more like it...you've saved yourself about a year's worth of watching it grow. Was that from a nursery or private party?

Yep a tree. Bought from a local nursery! They have huge greenhouses and are packed year around so had sales for there Fall Festival.

So, let me be the first to warn you about the word "dwarf"...I purchased what logees is selling (although i did not buy it from them), It's a "dwarf" variety of papaya called Papaya ‘TR Hovey’ (Carica papaya).....I will say, that it produces papayas from about 5' tall on up....it's the UP you should be worried about. I have harvested at least 25-30 papayas to date from this tree and you can see from the picture...there are probably another 40 to be harvested.....just a word of warning...if you arent growing it in a pot...."Dwarf" can be a relative term...i would have to guesstimate this one at 13-15 feet tall and still full of papayas....maybe if i grew it in a pot it would be a different story but this puppy is tall and a non-stop producer of papayas.....I cant reach them anymore, even with a ladder...i have to wait for them to fall....so, the bottom line is that it does perform as shown in the picture in the ad of logees....you can get papayas from a 5' stage but it just keeps on growing and growing and producing......then It grows some more

If you don't know what variety it is, I will cross my fingers for you that it is a solo /hermaphrodite type( at least if you want some fruits one day) or did you buy more than one?

Only one. But have seen them at thd nursery alone bearing lots of fruit.

I currently growing Maradol, Solo and Red Lady Papaya plants. Solo and Red Lady Papaya are self-fertile varieties, do not know about Maradol Papaya is self-fertile. Based of my past experience growing Red Lady Papaya, it had maintained the "dwarf" growing status (7 to 9 ft. tall). Maradol Papaya is a new growing variety to me but I tasted the fruit before and it is of excellent flavor.


Maradol Papaya plant grows tall. I got seeds from my neighbor, who is currently growing Maradol Papaya plants. His Maradol Papaya plants are approx. 15-16 ft. tall already. As jbclem mentioned, you can always cut the top off and force the plant to branch and grow low.

I can email you it. Pm me your email. My phone is the only computer we use at home and it never works with posting on here. I just called the nursery and asked them and they said they aren't sure what kind it is. They grew them there from seed but they do not need a male/female plant! SWEET! I thought they didn't when I saw them fruiting heavy in the past there.

If you can call the nursery, you might try to find out what the fruit looked like that the seeds came from. Round, long, thin, fat, all of those could give a clue as to the variety...or at least eliminate certain ones.

It looks like the normal ones in grocery stores. Big and round and long like a green pepper.

I think that would eliminate the Hawaiian Solo (Sunset and Sunrise) variety. Take a look at the photos on this papaya seed selling website, see if anything looks familiar.

Sorry for the picture quality; I had to stand under a tree because it was too bright otherwise. When I bike by in the morning or evening, I'll try to get a closer shot.

I couldn't ask about the plant; office was closed. Doctor golfing on a Friday afternoon?

If this is a papaya, it's definitely a dwarf because it's blooming; the flowers are yellow.
