I don't live in CA and am also rooting tops here in FL. I know what the tag says about the variety but haven't been growing them long enough to see how my crop compares to the original which I can purchase in the store when the time comes if it ever comes. *sigh* What kinds are you growing now according to the tag? Have you harvested any?

I grow the sugarloaf variety. Did not get any fruit yet, but they grow very well here and have produced a lot of pups so far.

I grow a lot of pineapple tops from pineapples I get at the grocery store. I have gotten a few of the tops to produce pineapples. All my pineapples are in pots on the front porch. They like the morning sun and I don't want to chance putting them in the ground and loosing them to the occasional freeze. I purchased a few from Florida "FHN" and they seem to be growing the same as the other tops. They seem to take about 3 years to bloom using the store tops.

The soil looks funny in the lower left pots. Is that shredded newspaper ?

The soil in the lower left with the bananas is sand with some potting soil in the bottom of the pot. Those are TC bananas in those pots. I'm trying to get some good roots going before I put them in the ground. Dwarf red and Dwarf green. The red bucket has recycled papers. The pineapples are in potting soil from Costco.

We have about 12 plants going now. I have success with pineapples by cutting the tops off a fruit, dusting the bottom with root-tone, and planting in a one gallon pot of potting soil. Once the it demonstrates growth, I transplant it into a 10 gallon pot, water and fertilize until it fruits (usually one year). Pretty basic and simple. However, I have been thinking to try out a method called "gassing" whereby one can reliably get fruit in 10 months. It is easy to get info on it with a quick search.

I love the idea of trying new varieties but am not sure where to find a reliable source for the different species I read about online. If anyone has good experiences with a vendor please let me know. I am wary of vendors promising me what I want to hear then selling me for $20 the same thing I could buy at the grocery store for $4.

I will say the only real tip I may have to offer is this: the 10 gal pot seems to be the magic size for me to get fruit in one year. I have tried to get fruit in smaller pots to no avail. Also, the root-tone may help develop healthy roots more rapidly. That's about it. Good luck.

I bought my Sugarloaf Variety from Wellsprings and can highly recommend them. Plants are beautiful, but they have not fruited yet, so I can not comment if I really got what I have ordered.

Yea ... The second pineapple is blooming. I think 2 more may bloom this summer. The plants are suddenly gaining girth.

Today, I saw this flower starting to show. It's real small and in a few more days it should be bigger and with a nice red color. I'll post another picture when the flower is bigger.

A view of all the pineapple plants

A close up of the pineapple that bloomed in April. It looks to be full size now so I'm just waiting for it to ripen. ... I did take a picture of the flower in April but it was lost (& others) off the Samsung phone. Anyway I was waiting for another to flower before posting these.

These are tops from Dole pineapples I potted about 18 months ago.

Pineapple update: all pics taken 7/20/2019:

Above new bloom is larger, now with red coloring and starting to take shape. This is the flower and each petal forms a section that will grow and fuse together forming the pineapple.

A closeup of the same:

The pineapple is starting to ripen.

I have 3 new blooms starting.

This is the picture of next bloom deep into the leaf center. It just large enough to see. The last bloom is not large enough to see clear.

This is total of 5 pineapples blooming/growing. I hope there is enough time to get this ripe.

update 7/23/2019:

In 3 days the pineapple turned near completely yellow. There is a little bit of green on the back side. The pineapple is still very firm to a squeeze/touch. Most online descriptions indicate 6 months fruit to ripen. To my count this one grow to full size (about 70-72 days; a week ago) and changed color in about 75 to 80 days. ... I'll pick when there is a little more give when squeezed since pineapples do not continue to ripen after being picked. ... Compare to picture in post above.

Pic of the new flower or baby pineapple. It has near doubled in size in 3 days.

There are 5 slips and the crown to be potted from this plant. And I think after picking the fruit, the plant will produce several more slips and a few pups at the base. ... Also, 1 or 2 slips could be left on the mother plant to grow but the fruit would be much smaller. This could be interesting for a patio display.

This morning I picked MY Pineapple. ... First pics of the new ones.

Now the Pineapple:

It was about the same size as store bought pineapples and weighed 3 lb 5 oz. ... It sat on the kitchen table all day and tonight I did a taste test.

I cut the top off and put in some water to repot in the morning. Then cut a 1 1/2" thick ring from the pineapple and put the rest in the frig. After slicing the skin and removing the core (1/2" dia), I cut the ring into 1/8ths.

Tastes report: A fine sweet pineapple flavor with a hint of coconut essences. ... Evaluation: DAMN THAT WAS GOOD!

Too Bad I can't attach a taste for everyone. But don't worry, I'll taste it again tomorrow cold from the frig.

Congratulations on your pineapple! That's pretty neat. Tthought it took three years to get a pineapple but 18 months is pretty reasonable. Do you keep them in a greenhouse or inside during the winter?
