Anybody growing asparagus?

Anybody growing Asparagus here? We have plenty asparagus in wildness and arround woods but none in cutivation. People here belive that they cant be grown in cultivation but we all know that isnt true. Tips, links, anything?

U have them? Read somewere that almost all cultivares (hybrides) are same sex plants?

We always had some in our ditch by our house and some near our garden growing that we would pick as we desired. I'm sure you could grow it in your garden quite easily. It's very cold tolerant and will come up every year....all you have to do is cut it off when it gets to big and smaller sprouts grow back.

I planted 12 on the side and 4 up front. I don't think they will do much of anything till next year :^)

Asparagus is easy to grow even here in zone 5. But it takes several years to establish itself and get large spears in the spring. It took ours 5 years to really start producing large spears but we didn't take very good care of it. No watering and no fertilizing. Too busy watering and fertilizing other plants...

Mound up the earth over the plants in the winter/early spring like you do for potatoes, then in March (in England) cut the shoots low down below the ground as they start to emerge from the earth and before they turn green and grow long and thin. They will be tender and delicious, once they have grown up and turned green - too late except for taste in stews.

I planted a bunch as 1 yr old plants. They said by the 3rd yr you can cut SOME, but let them grow to fern for more energy to grow the next year. By 4th -5th year, cut what you can & then stop cutting by July 4th & let the rest grow to fern. This gives them more energy for next years crop. Cut them to ground in fall. The females will have seeds that you can also plant.
They need a lot of fert -- 10-10-10 is best. They also grow wild along roads here.
Mine just died off after a few years so it seems not worth it. Too much work for such small pickins in such a little while.
You start out by digging a deep long trench. Fill with good compost, manure, old shoes - just about anything LOL. Then, gradually fill in the trench after planting - like every week - about 2-3 more times, & let them grow. Like I said, it's a lot of work but just not worth it to me...and I LOVE ASPARAGOOSE!
