i have around 60+ alocasias,colocasias,xanthosomas.. my big thai giants didnt make it overwintering..sigh :( i got some nice bigger plants from super gal in MS they are going great last yr my thai giants got huge!! leaves got over 64" i was a major happy camper.. im thinkin on plans on how to sucessfully overwinter ones i have this yr .. like to hear from other northern growers how you sucessfully over winter your tender EE's.. also i guess theres a alocasia robusta cross by lariann @ aroidresearch alocasia robudora supermax .. is anyone growing it? i think i'll order a couple and give them a try.. hope to hear from other EE enthusiants!!! :woohoonaner: |
Re: alocasias colocasias
Totally Totally Tempted by the Robudora Supermax... just hard to pay $35 for a 4" pot....
I probably also have an EE addiction. My newest that I'm excited about is the Mayan Mask from Brian Williams. |
Re: alocasias colocasias
hey hey.. yea.. who needs drugs when ya have plants..LOL
ones ya dont smoke that is.. :) i have many of brians plants.. great guy..great plants !!! ive been intrigued by mayan mask too.. i dont know how it would do inside overwinter.. i dont have a greenhouse.. yet :) will you grow it outside in spring/summer early fall? yea..the supermax is pricey..but oh well.. its only $$$ right.. lol |
Re: alocasias colocasias
I grow and sell Colocasia esculenta plants, which many people here grow for the edible roots referred to as Taro or Eddoe.

Re: alocasias colocasias
I'm going to try to overwinter it outside... maybe keep an pup just in case. I almost had the A. Brian Williams survive for me. So, since Mayan mask is supposed to be an improvement, with a little more mulch and possibly some plastic, it should make it.

Re: alocasias colocasias
richard..i wish more nurseries here would start adding more tropicals
to their stock.. i know its utah..but sigh.. my neighbours think im nuts.. starting lettuce in january.. hauling out tropicals out of the house on sunny days.. especially the big plants (over 150# some) but i love my gardens.. and the challenges of growing some but when they do well..its all worth it.. even when some dont..probably theres something i didnt do..or did wrong.. i just have to learn more.. thanks to so many here.. ive gleaned alot from ya all :woohoonaner: |

If you're confused with "Alocasia African Mask" aka Alocasia amazonica then of course they aren't hardy... Richard how big were your "Mayan Masks"? |
Re: alocasias colocasias
richard..so yours are in pots im thinking?
hey... do you know any difference in growing EE in pots over field grown? im sure most are potted plants.. a month ago i bought several EE from a gal down in MS .. she is lucky to be in semitropical area.. im sure she has some light frosts.. anyways.. her plants are fantastic!!! they took to potting up fine.. they are going really strong.. im hoping the thai giants, jacks giant, and xanthosoma's will be really big this summer.. if we get summer here that is.. sigh... |

Colocasia esculenta 'Midori Sour' Colocasia esculenta 'Blue Hawaii' Another cultivar is arriving next week. Keep in mind, I choose mine for the taste of the corm, not the appearance of the foliage. Quote:
