Abacaxi Pineapple Plant
Here is a photo of one of the newest pineapple plants I will be growing wanted to share with the group its called Abacaxi.
Abacaxi' (also called 'White Abacaxi of Pernambuco', 'Pernambuco', 'Eleuthera', and 'English') is well known in Brazil, the Bahamas and Florida. The plant is spiny and disease-resistant. Leaves are bluish-green with red-purple tinge in the bud. The numerous suckers need thinning out. The fruit weighs 2.2 to ll lbs (1-5 kg), is tall and straight-sided; sunburns even when erect. It is very fragrant. The flesh is white or very pale yellowish, of rich, sweet flavor, succulent and juicy with only a narrow vestige of a core. This is rated by many as the most delicious pineapple. It is too tender for commercial handling, and the yield is low. The fruit can be harvested without a knife; breaks off easily for marketing fresh.

Re: Abacaxi Pineapple Plant
Nice. Congratulations.
Have you tried the Sugarloaf variety yet? It is also a white fruit, nice and sweet with an edible core. I have 10 plants fruiting right now. |

Re: Abacaxi Pineapple Plant
Where do you find a Sugarloaf with smooth leaves? I should separate pups and slips way more often, but my skin is reacting allergic to the spiny leaves of my plants.

Re: Abacaxi Pineapple Plant
I bought the kaui sugarloaf pineapple from hawaii about 5 years ago -paid 25 bucks a fruit online. I have been growing the tops ever since. The leaves are smooth but have a few small spikes at the end. I've eaten 3 pineapple fruits from my plants - the fruit never compared to the original in size or taste. I'm going to try one more time with more acidic soil and more fertilizer.
I have one or two extra plants that I'm planning to leave outside this fall. Scaling back for now. PM me if you want want one at the cost of shipping.... |
