![]() Went out for breakfast on the Malecon in Puerto Plata yesterday and had mangu while looking out over the ocean. Fried mashed plantains with red onion rings on top and 2 fried eggs - very yummy!! Washed down with smooth Dominican coffee.

![]() ummmm...coffee. my daughter introduced me to sumatra coffee. yummy! i usually drink columbian supreme. and ive had coffee from p.r. thats yummy too. i love the vanilla flavors too. i like hazelnut also, but so does my german sheppard. so unless i drink the whole cup he seeks the cup out and finishes it. so im s.o.l. on the hazelnut. i have some coffee beans(whole) that came from africa. i so want to try it but i only have enough for 2 pots of coffee. im kind of saving it for one of those i hate mondays.

![]() My wife makes mangu for me every weak
![]() ![]() The first time I ate that, I was thinking, "what a heavy mashed patato thing is this that they make with bananas and oh my god, what an overload of unions". But now i really love it! If you want to make it at home, you have to use cold water. Don't ask me how it works. But if you use cold water, the mangu will not get hard, it will stay smooth after preparing it. ( Dominican kitchen advise ) You have to get used to certain kinds of food before you start to really like it. Typical dominican coffee isn't bad at all, but they like to make it very strong. Do not drink just before going to bed ! ![]() oh ... and they prepare the coffee in something special that is called "grec". Don't know how to write it. Pretty ingenious low tech but efficient thing. |

![]() I apologize Island Cassie. I didn't want to perform a hijack on your topic. Just nice to talk to people that also can appreciate a good mangu !
this food is so simple and delicious and very healthy. when you need to do lots of work, you have to eat mangu in the morning to be full of energy. Also it will keep the hunger feeling away for a long time. i have some nice pictures of exotic plants of my trip that i will put on the forum soon. just give me a little more time ![]() |

![]() Haha! No - I meant that I was hijacking your mangu thread - but I have since seen your other travel thread and posted there. (to keep this on track) I love mangu too and there is a little restaurant on the malecon in Puerto Plata that makes mighty fine mangu!!
