WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

Many of us post on "our" threads when we plant & move things around in our gardens/yard
I recently had multiple post spanning OVER ONE MONTH (6 weeks) merged into one post from over a month ago

WHY is this being done ?
It basically screws up the thread & ruins the timeline of when things were done
NOW, according to the thread I planted sunflower seeds & like MAGIC I had 36 seedlings to transplant
Mod said we should post a Date IN the post
THAT is stupid, when you make a post it automatically DATES the post
It appears this is being done to other threads

As a Mod on another site I only merge threads MINUTES apart & ONLY if it makes sense
This practice should be halted

I know exactly what you mean. If the posts are few minutes apart, then I understand, but not days or weeks apart. It sometimes makes the post confusing. What is the diff anyway? What is it 'saving' by merging?

Re: WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

Though I explained this to you previously on your thread, I'll reiterate my points. Post merging is done to simplify the forums so people reading through know that each new 'post' is a new person talking (rather than the same person) and to keep everything well-organized. It's actually very common that people on this site post consecutively with multiple quotes, to add information they forgot to put in the original (rather than editing the first post) or even to post additional information weeks/months later directly after one of their previous posts to 'bump' their thread to the top of the list for more views (which isn't a time-line sort of situation). Therefore, these things get merged to organize/simplify the forums. Again, it was not my intention to mess up your time-line, but rather, to keep the forums looking organized and easy to browse. Normally, others respond to a thread after the last update, so in most situations you wouldn't be consecutively posting anyway. It's nearly impossible to know when the thread creator was trying to retain a time-line in their thread. Therefore, if this is your intention, please either keep your own notes in a notebook on what was done when or take a few seconds to type in the date when posting consecutively. Again, the thread merging keeps the forums organized and easy to read.

And on a further note, I can see you are upset here, but I don't really appreciate my actions being described as "idiotic & lazy." The merging was not done to purposefully mess up your time-line, so attacks are not necessary. It seems you're letting your emotions run the show and this is being blown out of proportion. Let's keep this calm and professional, please.

It's not really an efficacious use of the moderators' time to scrutinize every single consecutive post to determine whether there is a time-line to preserve or ask the poster if it's okay to merge them. They simply get merged to keep things organized. Again, this is not a purposeful action against anyone....the site is not a journal, it's a forum.

C'mon Bryan, I did not see the words "idiotic & lazy".

This discussion was continued from elsewhere in another thread where it was already addressed.

It's pretty easy to sense the condescending nature of this previous response due to the capitalization and language. Like I have said previously, Dave. I'm sorry I merged your time-line. It was not meant in any way as an action against you, I assure you.

For future reference, the easiest way to update a thread if you were the last poster is to edit your post to add something like this:

UPDATE: 4-25-10
(add information here)

Again, merging consecutive posts and keeping the forums on a one-person, one-post basis keeps the information much more organized and easy to browse (especially for those reading through many posts a day).

Re: WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

It does NOT make it easier to read
How does reading that seeds are planted & then the resultant seedlings moved on the SAME day make ANY sense ?

I've never seen posts merged that were WEEKS apart merged on ANY site I have been on
I know it wasn't meant as any action against me
But this practice should be stopped

I read hundreds of posts a day
This site does not have that many new posts on most days

Its really not that hard, I do it on a daily basis
Minutes apart..same day...merge
WEEKS/DAYS apart - DO NOT MERGE

Re: WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

Okay, well I realize we could discuss this back and forth all day and not get anywhere....but just for the sake of display purposes.....which of the options below takes up less space on the site, looks more organized and is easier to read along with/scroll down less?

Re: WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

Option 1
Day 1:
I bought some seeds.

Day 2:
I began germinating the seeds.

Day 3:
I have 90% germination on my seeds.

Day 4:
I planted the seedlings outside and they're doing well.

Day 5:
Plants are doing great.

Re: WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

Do you understand my point? I realize your time-line got kinda butchered and doesn't make as much sense as it could (and for that I apologize), but you have to appreciate the difference in these two options. Keeping things together in one post per person ensures the site is organized and easy to read.

Re: WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

No I do not understand your point at all
The site I moderate has easily 5x the volume of traffic
I've never had ANY problem seeing the different dates posted

Very simple

Look at 2 posts
Posted the same Day...minutes part - OK to merge
Posted WEEKS apart
NOT OK to merge

See MY point

LilRaverBoi 04-25-2010 01:07 PM

Re: WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

Okay, how about a compromise. When I merge your consecutive posts, I'll be sure to add the dates in there for ya. That way you're happy, I'm happy and we can move on with our lives.

Scuba_Dave 04-25-2010 01:25 PM

Re: WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

How about just leaving them alone like every other site ?

LilRaverBoi 04-25-2010 01:34 PM

Re: WHY are posts weeks/months apart being merged ?

Well, I guess you still don't quite appreciate my perspective, but I guess that's your prerogative. But can we please move on with our lives. I'm certain the compromise listed above addresses both of our concerns sufficiently and will be a good solution in this situation.

I'm closing this thread because a solution addressing your concerns has been provided and the discussion is beginning to decline. Thanks for your input on this situation.
