Why all the "welcome to the forum" posts?
Just curious, why all of a sudden I am getting all these welcome to the forum emails when I have been a mmber since 2006.

Hi Nucci, it's related to this enhancement: http://www.bananas.org/f10/special-l...ers-12482.html

btw I'm currently working on creating a setting to let you turn off those emails if you would prefer to not know when someone said "welcome" to you.

Thanks Jarred!
You really work hard on making things just right, here. I love this site and think it's one of the very best. Thanks for all your hard work! : ) |

What I've found is the messages don't exist. Not one of the names appear on the link.
Is there something else going on? |
Re: Why all the "welcome to the forum" posts?
Hi Tommy, I can explain:
We setup that system linked in the earlier post here where members can more easily welcome new members. That utility to easily welcome new members was built to check a forum area where threads were mixed: welcome threads, commingled with social announcement type threads. So members were "welcoming" members who were not new, if they had a thread in that forum. Today, I made another change, I added a new forum for only Social Announcements and Good Wishes. I moved many threads that were in the old combined area to the new area. The new area does not have the "Welcome" system (just like most areas of the forum don't have that). So if your thread was moved, it would have lost the list of who said "Welcome", as it was nullified when the thread was moved. So that will explain why if you got a notice from yesterday for example but today there are no "Welcomes" listed. Check the location of the thread now and it will probably be that new area. You would have also likely gotten a "thread moved" notice in your PM box. I made this change for that very reason of threads getting "welcomes" when it wasn't appropriate, so moving forward, things will get back to normal and you wont get notices about your thread getting "welcomes" if it isn't eligible anymore. If something is still strange beyond that, please let me know either here or over PM so I can investigate the exact case. |
Re: Why all the "welcome to the forum" posts?
Thanks, Jarred. I was wondering about this too. I've been here for 39 months now, and started getting these "Welcome" messages and, then, after reading someone else's posting, like Patty's, telling us she was going on vacation, I would get a "Message from the website" insisting I welcome her aboard. I even got one saying I should welcome Harvey, and he was here before me. Whether I clicked Cancel, or OK, the message just kept coming back, or another one, asking if I wanted to navigate away from the page. Yesterday the only way I could get rid of those messages was by turning the computer off.

Right so now that we have two different areas for Member Introductions separate from Social Announcements you wont be asked to welcome people who have been here for a while, as only Intro threads will have those reminders.

Re: Why all the "welcome to the forum" posts?
Well I have an idea in mind to only allow members to use that tool to rapid welcome only those members that joined after they did. This way there isn't retroactive welcoming going on en masse. Thoughts?

Ha ha. My thoughts are I don't understand it at all!
I do recall there being something said about turning off the email thing? I guess I'll look at that. |
