So folks -- esp. newer members don't have to stumble through the "features" of the outdated forum software here.

You can check it out at the GrowingFruit.org site.

Re: Upgrade

I only see another forum and do not find any reference to the above software.

Net I don't have any problem with this forum's software. My login is automatic; I click on 'New Post' to read/see any post made since my last visit; and use the search to find any info needed that may be posted in the old threads; & use the wiki for reference info.

Correct. I said you could check it out there.

I suppose you could just Google it. Although unless you are going to install the upgrade I see no need to go there.

Growing fruit is a conglomerate of posts with little organization. Poor example of a forum to represent what the bananas.org should be.

I didn't look at that forum close enough to see that. But since you mentioned it, ... I realize now the re was no organization. Simply Topic threads in a bulletin board style.

Well that's false. Also, Discourse permits as much organization as the admins desire, the ability to drag and drop photos, and a lot more. You could preserve the entire structure organization, posts, and data that is here and gain a lot of functionality.

But I understand ... some people are really put off by new things.

Re: Upgrade

Not put off by new things. Just not shown anything new. And, you have failed to explain or show why the program is an improvement. ... It was your recommendation to use the updated software.

Re: Upgrade

A possible reason is you will not get a lot of this from the current insecure website.

Why should I bother to give you explainations on a silver spoon when you won't bother investigating it for yourself?

Because you created the topic and nobody else cares but you. That by default leaves the convincing up to you and the research. Unless you convince people to care about it, nobody cares. If you had no intention to back up your post with convincing research, you should have never started the post. The post to me looks more like a complainer complaining that the site is not up to standard than it is actually someone trying to fix it. The proof is in the fact you started the post then threw the burden on everyone else. You should edit the post with a convincing essay of research and implementation.

From

https://www.discourse.org/about.html

it sounds like they are talking about server side software without actually saying "server side software." Do I understand correctly that Discourse is server side software that is only of interest to forum operators, e.g., MediaHound?

Re: Upgrade

Still not sure why we wouldn't want to upgrade. For newbies, the ability to drag-and-drop images is great. For anyone on multiple devices, loosing the dependence on cookies for status is huge. For techies -- you know what I mean by it being a server-side platform with built-in "app" functionality for browers. You'll never lose context by pressing the "back" arrow or hitting the backspace key.

The current platform was outdated when it was installed in 2005. For heavens sake you can't even tag people in posts. In my opinion it's time to move on. I know there's a few people on this site who have a knee-jerk reaction to rebuke everything I post. How about we get beyond that and upgrade to 2018?

Re: Upgrade

Considering Mediahound keeps this site floating for little or no profit just to make us happy, I am not going to complain. It's fine to me. If he feels compelled to upgrade, I will learn to use the newer software which, by design, will bring it's own complications. Once you figure out the pics in the post thing, It still works fine. Maybe there's no way to switch it without losing the archives of data, No way any of us want that. What would the switch cost not only in dollars but in time? Who's gonna do it? Lots of these types of questions to be answered... I say, suggest it directly to Mediahound and leave it in his hands. (Or buy the site from him if he's willing to sell it, and run it your way)

Yes. Just a matter of writing a few scripts.

A few weeks and a few dollars, then once verified a few minutes for users of the site.

It's his thread. He's reading it.

A lot of profit. Ask him his selling price.

Re: Upgrade

in the same order...

All new software upgrades have issues. Every time anyone upgrades their software there are glitches or at least features I like lost and most newer software has many more restrictions than the older ones. I understand they also have new features which are better, too. All I am saying is it's an adjustment.

What's not working on this site?

A few scripts? Even if that's true, there are sometimes glitches and data can be lost... Do we want to take that chance?

A few weeks work to get it going? Maybe he doesn't have a few weeks to spare in front of the computer... I doubt it's just a few dollars.. Server side is always expensive because they know you will use it to make money.

You started the thread. He isn't on the site much anymore, as he stated recently, so you will need to message him your idea directly.

In the same thread I read he doesn't make much with this site. (As for his price, any site with nearly 30,000 members is a goldmine and thus worth quite a bit, he's just not mining it as deep as many would. I like that as I hate ads in my face all the time.) It's one of the threads about the site going down a lot...Do some research...It's out there, I promise you.

He also stated in a thread about the site going down to message him on the FB page as it's the fastest way to reach him.

Re: Upgrade

On a side note, maybe, since you are retired you could offer to do the several weeks work for free... :D

Shhh! I don't want to have to upgrade my ad blocker.

Re: Upgrade

Believe it or not, this site owner wrote his own forum software:

https://www.dpreview.com/

Or, at least, he started it (since, I see he is hiring a software engineer). It is the best I've seen and it doesn't look like anyone else's. I defy anyone to show me better.
