Nah, he wasn't misled, there are just two different types of snipe hunting and some folks have fun with the non-lethal form. I knew that some folks did actually hunt the real snipes in daylight (Wikipedia has a section on it), but I had never known anyone that had done it. I'm quite surprised that they are good eating. I hunted doves almost 40 years ago and they can be quite difficult to hit but I decided that I didn't like hunting a symbol of peace and found that they didn't have enough meat on them to justify killing them. I've had people ask if they could hunt doves on my farm and I always tell them my farm is a safe haven for doves.

That sounds good Tony--I like to cook my dove wrapped in bacon and stuffed with jalapeno and cream cheese.

Thanks, Jarred. Just to clarify: I don't plan on posting any hunting photos but was wondering if it was okay if someone wanted to post a link to a photo hosted elsewhere? Seems safe enough to me.

Thanks again,

Harvey

In order to make a forum active and to get it to grow is to get lots of activity and in order to do that you need to get people to socialize on the site and that includes talking about members interests and those that have the same interest chiming in so people can get to know each other even better!
Thanks... also in regards to topics being on bananas, that's what the Tiki Hut is for, it's why we have it. A place to discuss all other things.

That's fine, but remember if you delete your picture from xyz picture hosting service, remember it will remove it from your thread here. It's annoying seeing threads where people deleted their source pic and didn't realize it affected other websites where it was embedded from. Most of those services cap your storage space and people find the need to clear it out at times, etc. So just spread the word about the benefits to put banana pics here in our gallery instead.

Thanks, Jared. The only place I've ever uploaded banana photos to is right here at the org. In the future, any picture of a trapped rat won't be uploaded here! My host gives me unlimited storage space so I don't plan on deleting any files unless I have a brain malfunction and make a mistake.

I too agree with Clare; I am also an animal/plant lover and dont wish to cause harm to any living creature while I am graciously allowed to live this life on such a beautiful planet. I believe that EVERYTHING on earth has beauty and is a part of the spirit from which it was created. If your intent to kill is to promote recreation or amusement then it should go against spirit. I grew up in a family of hunters and the family ate what they killed (except for me-I cried!) I dont think we have this right to destroy what we did not create for purposes other than what is necessary. This practice of killing for sport and amusement will hopefully fade from our culture as more of the culture becomes enlightened. (Or the world will be destroyed as we know it and it all just crumbles at our feet from being gobbled up by its blind inhabitants). The bottom line is this is supposed to be a site about BANANAS. If you want to talk about killing for sport or amusement and post pictures of this , then go do it on a site devoted to that. I promise I wont go there and post photos of bananas.

I am sorry to hear you say that Clare I enjoy your input on topics and I think there were a few on this thread that voiced their concerns about this topic as you did...

Its just the Internets Clare don't let a difference of view or opinions or lack of other people compassion towards your feelings stop you from continuing the same as you always have with this forum... Who knows maybe your here to help dissuade the people from their evil critter killing ways! :-)

It has been disappointing for me to see that, even after I expressed the fact that hunting and killing things is upsetting to me, the conversation went on to the topic of killing squirrels, shooting snipe, eating veal and dove wrapped in bacon, and other topics which are objectionable to me. Patty even remarked that the thread was better than the hunting thread. I could have stopped visiting this thread and wanted to, but I wanted to read Jarred's response to it, and now I have.

Since I am the only one that seems to be objecting to this topic, I will gracefully bow out of the community and accept that this community does not care about my feelings or share my feelings and that this may not be a community of my peers.

I did enjoy talking to people about bananas and learning about bananas, and I plan to still occasionally visit threads where I am sure there won't be talk about killing things.

Clare, we do care about what you find objectionable but you don't seem to care that others have the right to an opinion different than yours.

Having food right next to you where you live is just letting someone else do the killing for you/us. That doesn't make it any more "right". I believe hunting for our own food is ethical and so is killing to protect our own food (snails, insects, rodents, etc.), especially when deterrents don't work. Killing solely for the "sport" (fun?) of it is not.

I hope you stay. I believe others respect that you and your opinions and hope you can have the same of others.

I believe it is important to protect populations of animals. Hunters were the first conservationist. I do not believe in letting animals suffer, but Mother Nature does. Starvation, disease, predation all result in more suffering of animals than hunting. Man is the only predator left in many cases. Hunting does more to protect the habitat of many non-game animals than most other efforts.

Most people nowadays do not even have to cut up the chicken they eat and that has led to an increase in sensitivity to all things related to eating meat. I am not a vegetarian, I eat meat, most of it meat that I have gotten from nature rather than the hormone and chemically modified meat found in the grocery store.

I never implied that we should all be vegetarians, and I admitted that I am not yet. The bottom line is that people shouldn't have to come to a forum where hunting is being discussed when they are coming to the forum to learn about growing bananas. That's really my point.

Please don't be antagonistic towards me just because you disagree with me. I am not attacking you for your beliefs.

So I guess the chicken and fish that you ate just killed themsevles?

I'm just pointing out that you can't have it both ways. Remember we are a comunity of like minded people here, we like to grow bananas, but that's not all we have in common and we like to talk with our fellow banana growers about other aspects of our lives. We can't do that any other place so Jarred has provided us a special forum called the Tiki Hut. You could start a thread about saving animals, knitting with recycled tires or anything else for that matter. I might not read them but I promise I won't complain about them or belittle the people posting in them!

But Clare, you attacked me because I believed that this thread was better than the
deer hunter' thread - (because of the funnies)! I said that BEFORE the recipes showed, and ONLY because of the humor coming from Dave, Shrek & Momo. Daves post of M Word & Momo getting his pic of a animated hot dog deleted was hilarious ya goof. I don't laugh at recipes...I take them serious!
You don't live in Alaska & are not trying to 'survive', so why do you eat chicken & fish? They got slaughtered ya know! You & Varig8 are getting carried away w/ your nitpicking here while at the same time your... Now, go make yourselves a comfort food -like a box of mac & cheese with all the preservatives & chemicals that you are prolly pumping into your kids, & leave the meat-eaters alone.
And, stop accusing ppl here of "killing for amusement" because I really don't think anyone is! We trap/kill animals to protect out kids/property or for food. I don't tell you you're less of a person cuz you don't practice my religion do I?

Ok calm down.. I kill only for purpose. I definately respect overyone's views. I was watching the Fine Living Network and some guy was eating Reindeer, whale and some other stuff. Of course he was in Sweden or Norway (I've been there before & frozen butt off) I believe in culture and they can do what they do in moderation. Everyone has choices, and since this is america so I don't press my views on others, now I may share them but I don't think everyone should be like me. I do believe everyone has a purpose to make the world a better place in one way, shape or form. I do believe recreational or people that "kill for the fun of it" have something wrong with them (truly).
By the way this thread based on the conversation is better than Patty's Deer hunting thread just for the record and that's all that was meant by the comment previously. People on here take way to many things personal that aren't intended that way initially. Of course there is always escalation, then compromise, reasoning & a clearing of the air that never should have been cloudy in the first place. Just remember we're all here for a common purpose. Our not so related reasons shouldn't cause such a commotion.. Be Well and don't freeze your buns off :^)

This site is divided into forums and the forums into threads. If you don't want to find a thread on hunting, don't visit the tiki hut where people may be discussing any of the things not related to bananas that may offend you.

If killing pest disturbs you, then don't read banana threads about pest--there may be someone there out to kill them.

Yeah, I was quoting your words, and also mediahound's reminder for courtesy to our peers ... and I review and format my posts carefully for grammar and content before submitting. and ... i ... t y p e ... v e r y ... s l o w l y.

as far as the time lapse, that's what happens when you work off of multiple windows, cutting and pasting, editing, spell checking, changing cable stations, popping my cup of chocolate in the micro, cutting myself a chunk of smoked gouda, columbo salami and honey smoked ham, etc., etc. probably took as long to post this message ... no, i take it back, this one took longer.
