PM Spam

Received the following spam email in my PM today and didn't see an easy way to tag it as such, so am reporting it here:

Hi,
I'm new here, how's it going?

"Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: it transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural & spiritual, and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things as a meaningful unity" - Albert Einstein

Hey TJ,
It looks to me as if she just wanted to say hi to another new member. That quote seems to be just part of her signature, not a subliminal message or the like.
Hopefully I am not wrong, but if I am, Jarred or Gabe or Ron will point it out.
Taylor

Re: PM Spam

Don't think so. I did a web search on the url and it's been reported as spam (same message) on other sites. Also, this person has a "Posts:" counter of 0, so has never posted a message on this forum.

Don't feel too bad. It's too cold to think straight. :ha:

I got the message too. But I went to her link and it had some info on lucid dreaming which I found interesting. Definitively spam though.

I got one to and forwarded it to MediaHound and he said he would take care of it. Looks like the user's account is gone but I still have the PM in my PM's.

All taken care of now.

Perhaps we will install some feature to prevent this, we could make it so people need a post or two on the forums before they can use the PM system. There are ways to prevent this but it comes with a tradeoff...

Have a great evening everyone and take it easy.

I got one, too. I was just trying to figure out how she had a join date of Dec 1969?!

MediaHound 02-12-2008 12:08 AM

Re: PM Spam

Hi Therese,
That strange date appears now only because she does not exist anymore. It would involve a lengthly explanation of computer language to tell you why, but the simple answer is it could be considered a glitch of sorts because she was deleted but some of her messages remained. Please disregard that join date...

I joined here because I got a PM from her on another forum and it seemed strange. I googled and found this thread.Glad to know my spidey senses weren't wrong before I answered.

Awesome! My very first post on this message board brought in a new member. :09:

I got that message too, I just deleted it. I thought it was really odd, but shrugged it off. But Mediahound I think that's an excellent idea... it's not really much of a tradeoff, imo if it'll stem off some of that silly stuff. :02:

Hopefully there's no way it could contain a virus or something, right?

Re: PM Spam

Not a chance, it was just someone sending messages to folks. She probably meant no harm just didn't realize that that's not customary here, or good netiquette.

The point of the message is to earn whoever is sending the message $$$. Whoever sent the message will most likely get money for each person they refer to the site (which is most likely a scam).

Don't click on the link!

It could also be a way to rank higher on search engines.

I, also, got this PM, at about the time this thread was active. Today, I got it again, but as a PM on the Aquarium forum.
