musa bajoo
I have a 5 ft. musa bajoo that is in a pot. It has 2 8 inch pups . What would be the best way to over winter these? I have an unheated garage. I was thinking maybe seperate the pups and pot them and bring them inside and put the mother plant in the ground and if i did would i need to to cut plant down .? I live in zone 7

Re: musa bajoo
If you like them where they are, leave them in place and mulch them..

Re: musa bajoo
Hi Amtrac,
I live in HZ6 and I would do as you suggested yourself. Plant the mama in the ground and mulch her there. The frost protection she will get with mulching her in the pot will be insufficient, unless you really pile on the mulch. In the ground she will profit from the ambient temperature of the underlying soil strata, from which she is isolated in a pot. The sides of a pot are also much more exposed to the cold. Slice the pups off with a sharp knife, while you replant and bring the pots with them inside the house in fall. Do your planting the mother plant at least 2 months before expected frost, so she has plenty time to establish herself. I usually wait until the first frost hits the leaves of my basjoos and then cut them off and protect the plants for the winter. For that you might want to check into this thread: Permanent banana shelter for winter and spring Good luck, Olaf

Re: musa bajoo
In zone 7 you still have at least 8 weeks of good growing weather left I would think, so a good amount of time to establish the mother plant in the ground. It is in the ground where they thrive, keep the pups in the pots and bring inside but plant the mother and plant extra deep to help insulate from the impending cold. Estabilshed Musa Basjoos are very resilient and survive the winter well in zone 7, lots of ideas on that here!

Re: musa bajoo
If they have a sound piece of corm the size of a walnut they will for sure, no roots necessary.
If the size of the corm goes down to filbert, I have no idea, but I would try for sure, what can you loose? Just let us know, how you make out (with the bananas of course). I would be interested about your success, if the corm was really small.

Re: musa bajoo
Separate and pot the pups now... You have over a month of great weather for them to establish themselves before you would have to bring them in... Just my $.02...
