Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan
Hi guys, it's me again..
My aunts wanted to post something but we never really had the time. We have gotta clean after his many huge collections of various things; plants, comics, model kits, cigars... and we've gotta move out by the end of this month! If anyone here is from Malaysia and is interested in model kits, do check this out. My dad's collection has a total of 595 brand new + open-but-complete model and 648 boxes of incomplete, missing manuals etc ScaleModelsMalaysia -> A Collection Of 595 Models Kit For Sale I hope its not against the rule to post up something irrelavant to plants here. I also want to thank those of you who sent cards to us. It's very much appreciated. |

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan
It is a great sadness to hear the passing away of Tog Tan. Due to my busy schedule, I do not often come to this excellent website. Today I come and learnt of this very sad event. When I first became a member of Bananas.Org a few months ago, Tog asked me what kind of nana I grew. I told him that I do no know, but is is delicious and would like to give him a sample when he happens to pass by Hong Kong. Now I have just had my harvest, but there is no way for him to try my banana. Anyway, I have just posted a picture of my banana in my gallery to appreciate the interest Tog on my farm produce.

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan
I also received the tobacco seeds, Cassie. Wow, they are indeed tiny! Thanks so much; these will be a reminder of Tog.

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan
I don't have much room to talk because I never talked to Tog as far as I remember, just read many of his thoughtful and informational posts. However, I wanted to say to everyone that got seeds that I don't believe there is anything better to have from a person. Offspring from plants that a loved one cared for, and to be comforted with the fact that they will continue to prosper well after that person is gone. To me, these seeds are Tog's last footprint, but it is a big one that will keep on living. This is personal to me because 2 weeks before my Grandfather passed away in January, he wanted to know more about my banana plants. After a long discussion, I promised him that I would get him a hardy edible type this past spring and tell him what to do to make it thrive, not that he ever needed to be told what to do in the yard! Since we knew it was going to be fatal, the day before he passed away, when we were at the hospital with him, I woke him up and even asked him where he wanted them, in the berm in the backyard. I haven't fulfilled my promise, and it makes me feel sick inside, absolutely nauseous. The worst part is, there really isn't a good reason, too cold, too wet, not enough time, no pups available. My point is that we should cherish what we have and make something out of it like Tog did. I am really disgusted with myself every time I think about my unfulfilled promise, and I don't want anyone else to feel that way about Tog and his seeds. I'm not sure if this completely makes sense because I just threw a whole bunch of my own hidden emotions into it for whatever reason. I'm sorry.
I'm really grateful that he was here with us when he could be, and that his posts will continue to open the eyes of new members about the rich culture and flora of Malaysia, a place that hardly any of us will ever get to go to. You are really lucky to have had him as a father, Stefanie. Taylor |

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan
Maybe you shouldn't be so hard on yourself, or be disgusted. You are likely just avoiding doing it because it's too painful to face the grief, not because you're just an awful person who didn't fulfill a promise!

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan
Yes, that is perfect for our next cover. A fitting tribute. Some day, if someone here ever hybridizes a new banana (my vote is it will be Gabe, though I know there are others here working on such things), it should be named 'Tog Tan'.
Taylor, buddy, you just about made me cry. If I lived closer to you, I'd go help you fulfill your promise. Like HBL said, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure your grandfather would have understood. There's always next spring. You should take all the time you need. We're here for you buddy. |

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan
Well Beth, I have to admit, that now you have made my jaw fall down on the desk. Nice job.
But I just wonder, is that pic so blurry because it was cropped from a larger photo, or it's just a demo for the thread? I saw this b4, when Ante posted it, and I still think it's one of the nanercoolest pics there's been in months.

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan
I think it just looks blurry now becasue it was stretched for that post. Trust me, Beth will have it looking sharp for the cover!

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan
It's cropped out of a larger, landscape-format photo, and I'm working on sharpening it up without sacrificing the colours or clarity. However, the pic wasn't very high-res to begin with.
Stef, if you're out there and you have a high-res version of this pic, it would greatly help me out. |
