I had originally come to the board to ask about a little musa I planted last week, only to find this post. Out of respect, I think I'll ask another day.
I was only just getting to know him, being a new member. I'm dumbstruck. God, we get so little time, we should cherish each moment. God bless and keep him. I know he'd have taught me many things. :(

Gino- Tog was all about the acquiring and dissemination of knowledge, so I would post your question in the appropriate thread.

Jewish tradition holds that we never write out G-d in full. Just the way I was brought up. :-)

Judaism does not prohibit writing the Name of God per se; it prohibits only erasing or defacing a Name of God. However, observant Jews avoid writing any Name of God casually because of the risk that the written Name might later be defaced, obliterated or destroyed accidentally or by one who does not know better. Observant Jews avoid writing a Name of God on web sites like this one because there is a risk that someone else will print it out and deface it. To avoid writing the Name, Orthodox Jews (and sometimes other denominations) substitute letters or syllables, for example, writing "G-d" instead of "God."

I'm sorry Howard, I did not know that. Thanks for explaining.:)
Ya know, if Tog was here, I wonder if he'd even tell us that it's his birthday. He was too humble/shy to have everyone wish him happy birthday.

Hey Patty, apologies not necessary. I was telling Gino that when I was much younger, I told a co-worker when she came back from lunch that she had some dirt on her forehead. I was given a polite education in the meaning of Ash Wednesday...LOL.

I am happy to report that I finally received the banana seeds from Tog, today! Wow - those took awhile. So worth the wait, though. Just sorry I can't email Tog, and tell him I got them, so I'll tell you guys, instead.

I took a picture of the envelope for you guys to see, with a label over my particulars. The stamps are so cool.

Check out how many kinds of banana seeds he sent me. I am so thrilled.

Thank you Tog - you were so nice to do this for me. I will germinate the seeds exactly as you instructed me to, and try to make you proud, with my results. Your spirit will still be very much alive and well, in all your banana plants left behind.

Getting your envelope today Tog, really made my day. Even from the great beyond...

Thanks again, friend.

My sympathies Howard. I guess the older we get, these things happen more often.
My Dad was 2nd oldest of 6 siblings & the last one to die. All of his friends died. His wife (my stepmother) died in '81 & then his girlfriend (old classmate) died late 90's after 10(?) yrs together (they both re-met at their class reunion). I don't know if I'd want to live that long & see everyone go. Makes me think I better make out a will!

Sure feels great to receive seeds from the 'banana king', doesn't it MediaHound?!!!

Here's a list of what Tog sent me:

1. Musa ornata var Pink flower
2. Musa ornata var Purple flower
3. Musa siamensis
4. Musa beccarii
5. Musella lasiocarpa
6. Musa velutina (dasycarpa)

I celebrated their arrival, by soaking some in water and beginning the germination process. Yippeeeee. Tog's varieties, are wonderful.

Another forum member and I were hoping to get some special mangosteen seeds from Tog but Tog let me know earlier this month that the crop this year was a wipeout. I wish I had them now more just to have something physical to help me look at to remember him and his kindness. I'm very happy for those of you that are getting the chance to grow some of his banana seeds!

On my last vist to the org back on 6-16 I was looking at the photo of Tog Tan with the blood on his arm from the snake bite, reading the caption, and wondering to myself, how does this amazing guy do all that he does with such good humor? He will certainly be missed by all of us here at the org. I offer my sincere condolences to his family and many friends. God's speed Tog Tan! We'll meet again on the perfect banana farm in the hereafter.

I collected some seed for Tog from the tobacco fields here and he was going to try to grow and roll his own cigars (not sure his thigh would be as good as a maidens though!). If anyone would like a pinch of it (it is like dust) - pm me with your address and I'll be happy to send it free of charge until I run out. I think he would like the gesture.

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

WOW, I just don't know what to say about this!!! I had been communicating with Tog over the winter and into the spring, and we had discussed dealing togather with bananas, alocasia, and other tropicals. From time to time he wouldn't get an email I would send, and I wouldn't get one he would send. So I thought nothing about not hearing from him for weeks at a time. I had dropped below the radar for the last month or so, so I have been out of touch with what is going on. I just don't know what to say. Tog was very knowledgable about his native plants, and he had large plans for the future. I wish I had half of the very, very nice plants he was able to collect. I will miss you dear friend.

Were good Cuban cigars ever hand rolled on the inside of a Maidens...

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

Patty - Howard has given you the answer, but good job I am not a cigar smoker as I don't think the thigh rolling would be a good selling point for me. The only cigars I have seen made were done in a similar manner to Mitchell's video clip - and made by men! There was a guy sitting on the sidewalk in town last Saturday rolling cigars.

In May I went back to England and took back 2 sorts of coronas, some churchills and some torpedos for a friend who was over from Germany at the same time. Good timing as it was his birthday then too.

So cool, Dalmatiansoap!

I hope to be looking at the same thing very soon. I have Tog's seeds just freshly sown, so they're not quite up, yet. Great that you will have one of the best connections to him - his banana plants!

Good luck with growing them - they look fantastic.

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

OMG wow! This comes as such a HUGE shock to me! I've been away from the site the past couple of weeks while I traveled a bit to see family/friends. Things like this always make me realize how short life is and why we must cherish every last moment.

I feel truly blessed and fortunate to have known tog through the site....even if it were only for a matter of months. He was such a huge inspiration to me and has definitely had a positive effect on my life. I was always amazed at his unending knowledge of reptiles and plants, his wonderful sense of humor, generosity and very kind nature. He always had such a positive, light-hearted energy about him and I will always miss that. Tog inspired me to start growing Ensete's and gave me quite a bit of knowledge about them. I finally have a small Ensete Superbum and I think I'm going to name it Tog in his honor. It wasn't from him, but I feel it is a way I can honor and remember him. I hope that he would have appreciated this. I hope his family plants an Ensete on his grave.

This is such a huge loss to everyone he touched throughout his life. My best wishes and most sincere condolences go out to his daughter and all his family/friends. Stefanie, your father was a very wonderful man! *hugs*

I would like to posthumously thank him for all the knowledge he has given me and to thank him for being such an overwhelming inspiration. Tog, you were such an amazing person in every way. Your passing is a great loss for all of us and you will be remembered with kind regards forever.

I always loved this picture of him. It is entitled "Me and my 'bum" which I always thought really depicted his sense of humor. I'm saving it to my computer now to always have it to remember him by. Well everyone.....a moment of silence to contemplate the greatness, achievements, memories and thoughts of such an amazing soul.

You'll always have a special place in all of our hearts, Tog!

A note of thanks to Scot (Chironex) for sending me a batch of M. violascens (pisang Tok) seeds from Tog in the original baggie. It still had Togs incredibly tiny printing on it. They're soaking now. It seems fitting to mention that the old man told Scot he should put them in his mouth and imagine them growing before sowing. I got a good chuckle out of this knowing his sense of humor. Still, they will spend some time in the "pie hole" before planting.....guess you get the last laugh buddy.:ha:
