Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

So nice to see people still posting about Tog and talking about him. His spirit will never die, so long as their are people to remember him and keep his light shining strong...

I remember how odd it was that Tog had mailed me some banana seeds, but then passed away while they were still in the mail. Even more odd receiving them, and knowing that I couldn't email him to thank him.

Hard to believe it's been a year already, but nice to see members haven't forgot him. His spirit lives on and always will...

I didn't know Tog Tan, but I have enjoyed reading his post and looking at his pictures. He seemed to know a lot about plants.

RIP

Never had the pleasure while he was walking this earth, but as long as he remains a part of your thoughts and feelings, Tog Tan will still be here amongst us in spirit.:08:

I'll never forget the surprise of seeing the "In Memoriam: Tog Tan" thread. I thought it was some joke until I read what Beth wrote ... followed by total shock.
He did have a way of making everyone feel special :). He was very intelligent & quick witted & always offered great advice. Never said a nasty thing to anyone.
Someone (not a regular member) once sorta made fun of his name & he took it lightly ... saying something like "yup, that's my name & I'm proud of it" LOL. He was not insulted & even made a joke of it.
I wish I had some of his energy! He was GO GO GO .
I will also never forget the thread he started about his "3 foot druiting dwraf" nana plant LOL. Some of us joked about his spelling and he joked back at us. What a colorful man he was.
Miss you Tog & will never forget the shock & sadness of losing you.

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

Very nice post, Patty.

I wasn't going to share this until I knew for sure it would live, but what the hell...

As you guys know, Tog had sent me some seeds just before...well you know. :( I sowed half of them, but not right away, and waited and waited...

After about 6 or more months when nothing germinated, I gave up. Instead of dumping the pot though, I sowed some Kumquat and Keylime seeds in the same soil. Just as some of the fruit seeds began to pop however, a sprout I didn't recognize also emerged. I had actually forgot about Tog's banana seeds still being in there and was confused as to what it was at first...until I remembered. :02:

I was terrified to disturb the seeding until it grew more, but it just kind of sat in limbo and didn't grow much at all. In fact it's still barely grown at all but I intend on transplanting it into it's own pot very shortly. Here it is...

To think I might actually have a banana plant from one of Tog's seeds!

: o

Unfortunately I couldn't tell you what kind it is though, as he sent so many different seed varieties and when I gave up on the pot, I threw out the label. I really don't care what it is anyway, just that it's his.

I decided to give the seedling to one of Tog's close pals - Bob. I won't mail it until it gets going though because it really hasn't grown much at all. We'll see...

Sowed the last of his seeds recently but won't give up so quickly this time, as I see they can take 6-8 months to pop. Hoping to have some more good luck.

Thanks Tog! :03:

Hollyberry, if you ever get that thing going and send it this way I'd treat it like gold and of course as always share any pups with those that want them. I know it's in goood hands and you're just the one to have one sprout and do well if anyone on the planet could..... well done!:woohoonaner:

Mark... you hit the nail on the head regarding Tog. He was so personale and would always be there for anyone who wanted advice or just to gab..... or trade friendly insults as we used to via email... but always in fun and good spirits..

I always thought I was his best friend and never understood what he saw in the rest of you who were also his best friend! :ha:

Bob, start a list and put me down for a pup in 2012 or whenever! :D

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

I really wasn't sure if this little guy, sprouted from Tog's seeds, would survive. It just sat and kinda didn't do anything for over two months. I transplanted it and it's recently began growing in our muggy humid weather. I'm very proud to announce that it looks like Tog's little banana seedling may live! Here it is today...

As promised, I will send it to Bob and he can share the pups with whoever he wants to. Just so happy I got one seed to pop.:goteam: Only one so far but hoping for others...in about 6 months! :ha:

A little brown on the tips but it's really grown since the last shot...

Here's the types Tog sent me, so it has to be one of these...

1. Musa ornata var Pink flower
2. Musa ornata var Purple flower
3. Musa siamensis
4. Musa beccarii
5. Musa dasycarpa syn velutina
6. Musella lasiocarpa

I'm not sure when you want me to send this little guy to you Bob, but let me know when you think it'll be ready...

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

Although I am a newbie here, I feel your pain, and although I never got the chance to meet Tog..... I feel like I have .... through all your loving memories of this kind man.

I hope and pray that his daughter, and friends... and all of you, have gotten past the painful mourning, and now can truly see all the good he did in so many lives.

Thanks for allowing me to see him for what he was! A Giant in his time!

Becky

Sherry, I'd keep it till next year if you have room.

Becky , very nice of you to see this and say it. Youre right on the money.

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

Yeah, Sherry, I thinks shipping a little plant puts it in quite a bit of shock which can be a challenge at this time of year. Getting a strong root system would make it much easier to withstand shipping in the spring.

I keep kicking myself for not taking Tog up on his offer of meeting him over in Bangkok last December. Maybe we can have a group meeting over there some time. He said the flower show is fantastic!

Bob 10-03-2010 06:11 PM

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

Harvey, I'm kicking myself too but wasn't planning on going till the February after he died... we were going to go fishing and on jungle adventures as well as... whatever other adventures came along.:ha:
Might be fun as a group in the future.

Re: In Memoriam: Tog Tan

Hi Sherry! I too would recommend shipping in the spring when the plant is pre-disposed to putting out new growth, as opposed to now when the plant wants to slow down and turn off for the winter. MHO...Rik
