Looks like his "passion"for the yellow fruit was at a whole different level. Whish I could have known him.

Re: In memoriam: Markku Hakkinen
I heard about this last week, and was saddened to read it! He was a true pioneer and can never be replaced. I hope somebody continues his work. And to think he didn't start his career with Musa until about 50 years old!

Re: In memoriam: Markku Hakkinen
I too heared about it, fearing it for some time.
I was in brief contact with him last Februari about some articles and wild species, when he was already in a quite bad state due to his illness. Nevertheless he was very eager to help out where he could! My thoughts and sympathy goes to all his family and loved ones, may he rest in peace, he will be missed indeed! Kind regards, Remko. |
Re: In memoriam: Markku Hakkinen
That is indeed sad news. I emailed him a couple of times and he always replied giving me kind permission to use some of his photos of Musa Chunii, a species which he described. Always gracious and generous of his time; a real loss to the banana world. There will be fewer new species discovered or re-described that's for sure. I look forward to the flowering of my Musa Velutina subsp Markuana it will remind me of him.

Thanks for posting this sad news Gabe.
His work and accomplishments will live on. That's a great photo of the two of you. |
