I've officially left for college....
Hey everyone, I just wanted to share that I've moved to Santa Clara, California to start my education at Santa Clara University. I'll be majoring in environmental science with a minor in biotechnology. I plan on taking my banana-growing habit up here with me, as there is a student-run garden here that I'm just dying to get involved with. I'm all moved in, and school starts on Monday. I plan on bringing up plenty of pups from back home as well as many other plants...Can't wait to start my new life here!

Don't forget about moving plant material across County lines without inspection.

Oh, I need to get all my pups, etc inspected first? Where would I do this?

Of course I'll still have time for that....My dad will be taking care of the ones at my house and I'll bring up some pups next spring.

Re: I've officially left for college....
Yo Caliboy 1994: Hope you take some AG courses, so you can enlighten all of us here! Also I didn't know you needed a county inspection to travel within California? I'm in Oregon, so I don't know, but I could get really politically uncorrect with all the agricultural protection rules I have found, while traveling into and out of California!
In Oregon and Washington, there are no check stations, only a Apple notice, when going into Washington State! Best of Luck with your studies! BrotherTom PDX, OR. |

Re: I've officially left for college....
Thanks a lot. I just might take some AG classes, and I'll definitely participate in the student-run garden. And the inspection is only needed for plants that you are bringing across county lines.

The very best of luck to you in school... Do your best and you will prosper from it. Heck we all might be talking to the next President of the USA. One who would take special interest in agriculture

Re: I've officially left for college....
Sounds awesome Andreas! A few weeks into my first semester at Mississippi State University myself and I'm definitely trying to find avenues for expressing myself botanically lol. I hope you have an incredible time!
Just went walking around downtown today for about an hour, and happened across a yard with a gourd vine on the fence. Ended up meeting a fellow gardener who works at the campus and got a ton of [heirloom] seeds! Here's to growing a cayenne pepper in my dorm room lol

Re: I've officially left for college....
Thanks everyone. The garden here is really awesome. They aren't really growing anything tropical, but there's plenty of room for me to fill up with bananas. I saw an Orinoco plant in fruit today while I was riding in the car, so growing bananas up here probably won't be as difficult as I previously thought.

Re: I've officially left for college....
Well, on Friday I'll be flying home for the weekend, so I'll finally get to see my plants in person again. According to my dad, they have grown huge since I've left, and are only now finally starting to slow down. College has been going great, I enjoy my classes and my schedule, and I've met a lot of awesome new people.
Also, I talked to someone who works for the campus garden, and she said that they were actually thinking about getting a banana plant. I'm thinking of bringing my Pisang Ceylon up here as well as a Tall Namwah, and a Dwarf Namwah for my friend who lives up here.
