It is a curcuma, of which tumeric is a member of, I have them in my yard. Mine get 6 feet or more but have a pink stripe, so maybe not the same variety. They bloom before the leaves emerge. Feel the leaves to see if they are fuzzy underneath, this is a indicator.

Here is a pic of mine, it is curcuma elata or giant plume ginger, yours looks a little more like tumeric or curcuma longa. They have attractive flowers and foliage.

curcuma elata flowers.

Look like plant in the same family with ginger. Try smelling their leaf.

curcuma elata flowers.

Will they take winters okay? Do they spread? Do they like full sun or shade? How much does a hamster weigh?

Snookie,

You're definitely growing a Curcuma ginger. It could be any of a number of summer blooming Curcumas but since you're a Louisiana resident, my guess is Curcuma Petiolata. If it is, it has zone 7 hardiness. Even if it isn't, it's going to be hardy to zone 8. It has been a pass down plant in the deep south for generations. Mine start blooming in late June. Send me a picture when it blooms, it would help with the identification.
