Default Toucan eating Musa dasycarpa

I went to visit some friends today and while sitting on their porch we saw this Toucan eating M. dasycarpa fruit. They have these plants growing all around the house and they told me that the Toucans love the fruit.

Fantastic shots; I may (or not) be able to eke out the survival of a banana plant here in Canada, but a visit from a Toucan I will have to live without.

This makes me truly envious! I loved my one visit to Costa Rica.

I've been trying to recreate the tropics here for so long, with my cold-tolerant subtropicals and my birds, etc.

How magnificent it must be to have sights like that before your eyes daily!

Thanks for sharing the pics! You brightened this winter day.

Toucan is...... too cool! Seeing this just makes me want to visit Central America that much more. I've been reading some books on your part of the world recently and am just dying to see it for myself.
Thanks for posting this.

Cool!
Is that toucan eating only those whiter bananas? Are those unripe?

They pop open when the seeds are ripe. Cardinals like to eat the ones in my garden, I won't be seeing toucans any time soon!

I have a friend who grows it just to feed to his parrots. They love them.

Here is a better photo to show what happens when the fruit is ripe. The skins peel back and expose the white fruit.

I forgot to mention that the Toucan who was feasting on M. dasycarpa is a Chestnut-mandibled Toucan.

Here's a different species of Toucan - The Fiery-billed Aracari

I found this one perched outside of my window one morning.

Thumbs up Re: Toucan eating Musa dasycarpa

Thanks for photo Jeff! Very beautiful moment in a picture. Probably it liked this fruit. The plant will be grateful to it, that it will extend seeds in other territory.

Great photos as usual Jeff.
I know this is an old thread, but Jeff you may have answered a question I asked about this banana. Does this grow well in the tropics? The question is, is this place you visited in the lowlands or at some elevation.
