ensete glaucum flowering
:woohoonaner: banana pudding, banana kabobs, banana pie, banana splits,...……………… what, seeds you say? no worries, with the few teeth I have left I should be able to mow right thru those baby's.
walking in the yard today checking up on a few of my bananas that are a concern I spotted my snow banana looking like the new leaves were shriveling. at 4 1/2 ft. p-stem heighth and being the only banana to survive the winter mostly unscathed [lost her leaves] I did not expect this. she must have been drooping a bit because after it rained she covered back up. |

there is actually 2 bananas in the background. the closest one is a goldfinger. and the one way down by the fence is a sumatrana x. its small but almost inline with the other two. |
Re: ensete glaucum flowering
Amazing! How long from pup to flower do you think?
Was it grown as a plantlet or did you grow it from seed? That’s amazing! Make sure you let it go all the way! Let the flower and seeds completely dry all up! Studies show the last couple of weeks are most important to develop good fully developed embryos!! And most important save me some seed! Hahaha. Woohooo fresh seed! I’ve never seen one of these flower! Not outside the tropics. Sadly no fruit! Just seed! Amazing job Beam! I’m gonna start calling you “Master Beam” after this! Wow. |

I started this from seed almost 2 years ago. oddly enough I bought the seed from a man [I assume] in texas off ebay, 10 of them. even stanger I got 10 seeds of ebay from a person in texas one was crushed. I planted the crushed one anyway. well after the other seeds didn't come up I dug them from the pots. I had 9 whole ones. the broken seed came up! figger on letting the bunch grow till they start rotting, then dig out the seeds and clean them. you sure are welcome to some. |
Re: ensete glaucum flowering

Interesting the flower is all green. I wonder what happens to the bananas under the bracts.

Re: ensete glaucum flowering
They will develop and fill out. I’ve read they are more like “seed pods” than fruit. I’m excited to see! Keep the pictures coming Master Beam!!

Re: ensete glaucum flowering
got a real hard rain, I could hear roots popping. got the pallet and propped it up. I am on sand, with the base of the plant I didn't think there would be a problem. learning experience right?
the bananas go all the way around, must be more than 3 dozen of em. their about 3 inches long. blue java? :ha: |

Re: ensete glaucum flowering
time I brought this thread to a close.
the plant finally fell over throwing seed pods all over that part of the yard. I counted over 4 dozen seed pods of various sizes. the large seed pods had near 3 dozen seeds in them, with very little pulp in them which tasted to me bland [maybe pumpkin taste?]. now after maybe over 200 dollars of seeds including Burmese blue seeds that never produced I had plenty to hopefully get one plant. I waited till February to plant. using covered cake pans and 3 inch pots instead of soaking the seeds in water first I planted 5 seeds in burpee potting mix and soaked the pots. then added water to the bottom and covered them. later I found out many of the seeds were hollow not good. now I don't know but it could be mother natures way of doing things or it may have been so many days of no rain last year or maybe the way I stored them or maybe they were getting old with a quickness. I had a few seeds come up. |
