Incoming cold.....
 

Need an advice...

I've an Ice Cream 'Nana (thanks to Linda_Ger) that it's outside under it's personal greenhouse.
The problem is that it's still a little 'nana and I'm very concerned for the expected blizzard coming here next week, from Tuesday till friday with minimum well below zero....

Do you think the Blue Java can stand that temps for a week if keeped dry and sheltered from wind or should I dig it and take it inside ?

I've read that the Blue jave if fairly cold tolerant but being a little one I don't know what to do...

Pal, it's too small a baby. If it gets down abruptly and for a longer period (night and more), it might be in trouble. The smaller the plant, the weaker it is against cold damage. Btw. I've never seen somebody do the mulch from veggies and weeds. :D

Banana with parsley must tastes great, but this tame I would rather dig it up and replant to the pot.
It will be more comfortable to you to overwintering it into house, and you will get bigger plant to plant it out when the spring time will come instead of taking care and stressing every time when bigger frost comes.

My almost 2 and a half meter tall(in total) ''Blue Java'' just lost its leaf blades from a day arround 0C with snow and -1C or a little more below 0 overnight. The pseudostem and even petioles seem perfectly ok but we will have to see...Anyway,i thought it did pretty well considering it withstood a snowstorm! But its much bigger than the one you are overwintering. I too would suggest to pot it up and bring it indoors unless you can give it above 20C during normal days and keep it above 0C during the extreemly bad ones...

Hi guys thanks for the advices... I hurried up and dig it before dusk.... now it's in a pot inside a condortable indoor greenhouse with two fluorescent lights over its head...

I was very concerned about losing it since it seems the 'nana is very vital and sprouted two pups even at this young age...

Ante, the underleaf colour is green with little brown spots that disappear gradually as leaves grow.

Jack, I have a very big parsley plant and since it's going to be very cold it was time to cut the foliage, so I though , why not use it as mulch ? I'll have the first ice cream banana with a subtle parsley taste.... LOL


Seweryn, for us 0 ° is like an incoming glacial era ... maybe romans share some genes with 'nanas about the cold, don't you think ??? LOL


Kostas, I saw on TV that Greece has been hit hard by the cold stream... I'm happy to hear that your icecream survived quite well the snow storm.... I hope Rome will not get brutalized that way by the weather...

Hi,

my Rajapuri and California Gold were also hit by last nights frost. It was - 3 ° / 27 ° F in the night. The night before it was just around freezing and no damage was done, but this morning the leaves were burned from the cold and black.

I cut all the leaves from the Raja and almost all from the CaliGold.

This morning, my neighbours cut down their bananas (see this thread for pics:http://www.bananas.org/f12/bananas-m...tml#post144497). They threw the plants on the sidewalk close to the trash can, so I took the stems with the leaves and ripped them apart and put it on top of the soil around my nanners. So I got extra mulch which may become a good compost soon. 5 stems all about 3 meters long plus leaves are lying around the two plants.
I don't think that my Ice Cream, Ladyfinger and Yuannensis on the island of Skiathos were affected, because it was just 2.5 ° C this morning, so no frost and hopefully no damage done.

it seems to me that you have a little snail problem :ha:.

It`s a relief to know that you put the Ice Cream inside, now. It`s still a baby :bebe:...

I would definitely get them to a sheltered place. Frost cloth can help when the temps are not going to stay below freezing for more than 5 or so hours, but if there's SNOW, it's probably not going to be very effective.

@Rick: the Ice Cream will not tolerate much below freezing at that size. A larger rhizome 'mat' is really necessary to develop before it can handle the dormancy below ground, as it needs that energy store and also the insulation of the mass to get it through the cold. IMHO, I'd keep it indoors if it even gets close to 0C.

@ Linda: I think that with all of that cilantro and greens, the snails will be attracted to it like flies to manure. lol

That's now snail's work.... it's caterpillar work!
I spent all summer and fall removing a lot of those nice crawlers...

Yesterday I took inside a Grand Nain and after few minutes I saw something green crawl from inside the cigar leaf !!!

I had a serious snail problem this summer, but fortunately they preferred eating some Cannas.

Im sick of winds now. Most of plants are burned by winds


Its hard to see but there is actualy foam made by wind on Sea surface

note two small palms in front, its constant high wind for more than 24hrs

and temperature is dropping and it looks that we will hit the magical ZERO :(

This is how they looked today after wrapping them to protect the stem from further damage. I hope it'll be enough to get them stem through the winter.
Usually it doesn't get below freezing very often and with very few exceptions only at night for a few hours. Last winter's low was - 2.8 ° C (27° F) first freeze was in January.
This winter we had two nights below 0° C so far and there's more announced for the following days. After the weekend it should get a bit warmer.

All other 'nanas were inside home....

At first look seems that admist this carnage , the pseudostems of the 'nanas is still green and healty...
What should I do ? Cut everything is burned and soft or leave as it is and wait for spring ?

Rick, that looks bad but those naners are quite high and old, so in most cases, it just regrows back. Hope for much better weather soon. ;)

Also, remove any dead or dying tissue. Low temps, water and dead tissue are like an invitation for rotting and pests.

May it be warm and sunny for you iduring the rest of the winter.


Palms look great though. No damage at all. That's something to start with. ;)

Here we go again..... I just saw the forecast and the nex week-end will bring freezing temps and snow at sea level everywhere in Italy except (maybe) in seaside Rome's surrounding......
