Used varathane on my sanded living room floor- great stuff, although I have no idea about it's moisture repellant characteristics. Another thought would be to use a marine teak finish paint.

Varathane does nor "repel" moisture in the way a wax like coating does, i.e. let the water ‘pearl’ off,
but it covers with a hard transparent finish, which will let no water through.

BTW: In one of my previous posts I suggested to line the planter boxes with fly screen, while that is
a good idea for the bottom to keep the soil in and let the water drain out, for the sides landscaping
cloth is better. That also comes in white and can be painted on the upper edges to match the
colour of the wood more closely.

I haven't planted it yet...but I did find some great, square planters that fit in the boxes perfectly! So I plan on doing it that way. I'm wanting to plant my persian shield in it this year....

Hi Angie,

that is of course the best thing, providing you deploy a means to get the pots back out, once they are
filled with your growing medium. If the pot stick out a bit at the top, enough to get a grip, you have
got it made. Otherwise placing proactively a block of wood in the bottom to raise it enough for that,
may save you a lot BS&T later.

Good luck,
Olaf
PS: Now that you have started it; what is Persian Shield?

Here's a link to persian shield...
Proven Winners | Persian Shield - Strobilanthes dyerianus

My mom had it one year (grows as an annual unless you winter it), and I was amazed! Beautiful dark metallic purple leaves...... I grew it for the first time last year, and had more comments on that than I did anything else I grew here...even my bananas!

The pots I got are the same height as the boxes themselves...however, there is just enough room to get fingers in to lift them out if I need to. They are PERFECT!

That is a great idea on the lanterns. I will figure a way to incorporate it in my gardens.
