Future flowerbed for bananas
 

Yesterday I dug up a small tree and a few plants to clear up a flowerbed that I want to put banana plants in it next year. Its a small flowerbed and I tilled the soil the other day. I may have to add more amendments like perlite since the soil is clay. I did amend it last year with composted cow manure and some topsoil. Its on the northeast corner of my house but it does get direct sunlight from the south because I don't have any trees to obstruct the light. It does get shade in the late afternoon hours. I really need to redo the whole thin, like making the stones more even. I was wondering if this would be a good spot for bananas?

I think it will be OK. One of my bananas is too close to a old barn(think that's the correct word). I mean really close - 3ft on a east from the bilding(I plant it there, cause that place is protected from dominating in that area western winds), and you can see on a photo this is not problem for the plant although even in a longest summer days the plant was in shadow after 4-5 p.m

Thanks Ivo. You have a beautiful banana plant. I'm always afraid to put any plants in full sun because most of my plants burnt to a crisp this summer in the heat and drought. It was 100+F most of this summer.

Try adding "Shale," -an expandable mineral rock when wet that always retains 30% air so roots have access to air-drown proof; great for good drainage soil. Heard it helps to loosen clay in garden bed.

Thank you Iz. I saw some expanded shale for sale at a local feed store. I'll get some next year to add to the flowerbed. There are a few areas in my yard that are sandy loam, I wish my whole yard was sandy loam lol
