Finally! I'm officially wormcomposting! Just bought a pound of red worms and they're officially eating part of what I used to throw away. They seem pretty happy about it too!

That's good. I have been doing Worm-composting for almost a year. I started with 1 lbs, rough about 1000 worms. Now, I don't really know how many I have LOL. Anywhere I move stuff around the worm bin there's worms! These little guys reproduce pretty fast.

One crucial thing that I learned and almost killed my worms was over feeding. Start off with small dose of food. If it starts smelling bad or too wet, put some shredded black and white (no glossy) newspaper or phone book pages. And let the paper absorb the wetness.

They love watermelon rinds! They eat it fast!

Thanks for the infos... I think I overfed a bit. It's my third day and they're far from finished with what I gave them. Still, they are quite active and are crapping a lot. It doesn't smell bad so far but I won't give them any food until they're done with this one. I actually did put some shredded paper on top. I'll try to post some pics next week.

So far so good! Sorry, no pics yet... They are doing great and no smell yet. I've given them food twice so far. I'll go get some watermelon this week to thank them for their hard work! I put some more soil mixed with carton and paper on top of the food each time I feed them. I should start a second colony during summer, if all goes well.

Too bad I'm so far away! Can't complain though; I'll have enough worms soon enough... They're pretty prolific. They still are doing great. I gave them strawberries from florida the other day and they took care of it pretty fast!

Sorry but I haven't found the time to post pics yet. They're still doing great but I had to split them into 2 more colonies. I started to have some little flies that were already in my plants. I've put some traps and we'll see!

Still haven't found the time for pics... Went to harvest the compost and decided to wait... Too many babies in there. Gonna wait they grow bigger first. These are very very prolific.

I have always envied folks who set up worm bins to harvest great stuff for their gardens. Sadly I'm not organized enough to care for them. (I no longer have any pets since successfully (fingers crossed) poisoning the resident rat (probably former pinkie for the snakes owned by previous owners) who was bold enough to eat through 2 boxes of chicken stock--I mean, that's just beyond wrong IMO.) So I'm content to encourage regular worms in my yard (holy cow, even in FL I have quite a few) and let them do their thing. Doesn't mean I wouldn't love to see pictures of your set up so add my voice to those clamoring for shots of your setup.
