about as much as a tomato. bananas love water but you cant grow them in the middle of a lake.

Bananas like & need 'moist' soil, but does not like 'soggy' soil which will cause the roots to rot. However, DRY soil will slow & delay plant growth & fruiting. ... Several environmental factors effect soil water loss due to evaporation. The daily soil evaporation rate is a measure & reported value by the weather service for ag weather reports for your location.

IMO, one only needs to irrigate to replenish the soil evaporation losses plus water transpired by the plant to maintain proper soil moisture. This past year I watered my nana patch daily as well as wetting the plant leaves. On hot days I wet the plant leaves twice. The leaves never drooped all summer. ... Drooping leaves at temperature less than 100° is a sign a healthy plant needs water. Very high temps above 100° (??) will cause leaves to droop & the plant to stop growing regardless of soil moisture.

In my area of South Georgia the daily soil evaporation varies from about .23 to almost .3 inches per day. This calculates to 50 to 60 gals of water per day per plant just soil water loss.

Now, per U of Fla publication "Banana Growing in the Florida Home Landscape" Banana plant need 4" to 6" of water per month or 1" to 1.5" per week. ... What they did not state was the wet area to use for water calculation. Banana roots can extend out to about 30 ft from the plant. I use 9ft or 10 ft as an average for my calc. .... So for 1.5" per week: (9 ft^2 X pi) X 1.5"/12= 31.8 cft => 238 gals per week ... or about 33 gals of water per day plus soil water loss. ... So this could be easily 80 to 90 gals per day per plant

Just water your plants daily to keep the soil moist and watch for signs of soggy soil or soil too dry (top 2" or 3"). ... However, a 5 gal bucket of water once a week IS NOT SUFFICIENT.

I am in North Hollywood , CA . I have killed many banana plants by overwatering. I use a moisture meter now and the survival rate is better. I only water if the meter indicates dry. If you are in the L.A. basin you will have a better chance than the San Fernando Valley.
