Buying nightcrawlers for the garden?
 

I just got some really good sludge from the edge of the road at the bottom of a hill in a curve. It stays wet and all of the oak leaves have mulched down, along with some road sand. This stuff has been stewing for years and when I put the shovel in it, it smelled just like a Louisiana swamp. It was chock full of earthworms too, which leads me to my question:

Has anyone ever purchased nightcrawlers from a bait shop and put them in your garden? Is it worth spending the money? How many is too many?

I have thrown leftover night crawlers into the garden after a day of fishing on several occasions but I can't say I noticed any difference, good or bad. Although there are already so many worms I can't really imagine it would do much.

I can't say I have seen any of them after the introductions either.

And just the process of turning poor soil into good will usually attract plenty of worms in and of itself...... in my experience:)

Bait shop night crawlers are a Canadian species that will not survive in our climate.

Well I agree, except that these are raised beds and the bottoms are lined with newspaper, so it's going to act as a barrier for awhile. Anything I add will be contained for at least a few seasons. George Webster saved me some time, money and brain wracking with his answer, so I'll get more of the "road muck" and harvest the worms from it now, as it's getting mixed in, in a few months anyway.

There are some decent vermiposting vids on youtube.
You may start your own worm farm with red wigglers and introduce them to your garden area.

Does every invasive species from Asia jump? First the carp, now the worms? What's next, Asian jumping frogs? :rolleyes:

Edit: I just watched that video, and I think some of those I brought home were wriggling like that. I'll have to check the rest of the container to see if there are any left and look at the band. I mean, I was amazed at how bug shyte crazy they were going; just like a snake.

That would suck, I guess I had better examine future bait purchases a little more closely.
