Those studies are usually financed by the manufacturers/distributors of the product.
University research departments want to live and are usually not inclined to bite the hand, which feeds them. I am not trying to imply, that they will monkey with the data, but their interpretation usually leaves some room for discretion ;) Be skeptical! Olaf |

Most people can make it for free, but it's extremely inexpensive and is also sold as a cooking fuel. The waste product from a gas grill smoker box would work. Amazon.com: bbq smoker box |

The February Issue of the Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science is devoted to recent research of Biochar and Hydrochar. Several studies detail both Nitrogen depletion and Methane production. On a whole, I believe the results are not positive. The articles are freely available here:

Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science "Biochar is a porous and low-density carbon-rich material produced through the heating of natural organic materials under low-oxygen condition. Biochar may be used as a soil amendment to improve soil physical and chemical characteristics and promote plant growth. Biochar has been shown to decrease soil acidity, bulk density, nutrient leaching, and greenhouse-gas emission, increase cation-exchange capacity, nutrient and water use efficiency, and the ability of soils as habitat for microbes and fungi. Biochar also directly adds some macroelements (P, K, N, Ca, Mg) and micronutrients (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn) to the soil, which are needed for sustainable agriculture. Therefore, biochar application has received a growing interest as a sustainable technology to enhance the soil quality and crop production." "Field and laboratory studies demonstrated that biochar is an excellent soil amendment to improve soil quality." |

On the balance though there are several negatives, as pointed out by other articles in the issue.
