Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
Hello all.
I have a dwarf Cavendish in a 22" pot. It was doing really good up until a couple of weeks ago when the leaves really started yellowing and dying. I have done some reading and it seems like i might have an over watering issue. Possibly a nutrient issue, but what is really striking me is the three pups growing off of it don't seem to be showing any signs of yellowing. What do you guys think? |

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
Sounds like too much water, is the pot draining well? It needs to dry out to the bottom, pics need to be 2MB or smaller to load in the gallery.

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
Maybe the temperature. My dwarf Cavendish that are here are getting some yellowing..... Dwarf Cavendish are just super cold sensitive.

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
I thought it was. After doing my reading i went and tipped the pot and some water did come out the bottom of the pot and it had been two days since the last watering. I drilled more drainage holes into the bottom of the pot.

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
Oh yeah that would have been helpful lol. I am in zone 10 in southern California. We have had temperatures of high 60's through low 70's in the day and lows in the mid 40's over night.

Make sure the image size is LESS than 5200Kb and has a proper file name & extension. .... I resize photos to 4"x6" paper size at 100 to 150 dpi. This makes the image size about 300kb to 500kb. |

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
40's will take out older leaves on a DC. as long as you don't get freezing the plant will bounce back come springtime warmer temps

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
Its not just older leaves. Its all of them. The last new leave started yellowing after only being open for two days. Also why is it only the main plant but the pups are still doing fine?

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
If it hasnt corrected itself, you could always pull it out, and repot in well draining mix such as 50/50 cactus mix and perlite. You will also be able to inspect the roots and get idea if its too wet. If your pot held water for 2 days, id repot, and let it dry out for a while.

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
The pup's do not have roots as deep, so they are not getting as much water to them.

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
I'd bet its just the cool temps. I have a unknown super dwarf cav.(unknown because it originated from Jamaica and fruits well in poor soil and reliably) that is doing the same thing, and it was very lush and green before some bouts of cold weather in the upper 30s., and low 40s. I know the soil is rich and full of the right minerals( I test soil, and if needed even leaf material for deficiencies)for lush green growth, so I know it's not that. Also, my other more cold sensitive varieties are acting similar such as Rose, and Pitupi. The only difference is that Rose and Pitupi show more spots and stuff on the leaves before yellowing, while the super dwarf tends to yellow more quickly, without the spots, or at least very few in comparison. One way I know at least with mine, is the arrival of a new green cigar leaf, since during this time of year our temps can fluctuate quite a bit. We could get down to upper 30s, and then two days later be in the 80s, so growth is always there during our winters.

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
The cool season will cause this, your plants will slow down in growth or go dormant. They are not using much water now, that is why you want them dry this time of year. It would be nice if it warmed up here in a couple weeks. Mine won't get outside until mid May.

Re: Yellowing leaves but pups are fine
Hello all
Thank you so much for the help, for the last two weeks our temps have been back in the upper 60's and lower 70's and while the main plant did die a week or so after my last update the two remaining larger pups held on and started making new growth. There was a third tiny pup that i thought died off but even that little guy started coming back. Since i am blessed enough to live in zone 10 Southern California and from here on out we will only be warming up, so my banana and i should be just fine. Again thank you all for the help. |
