Tiny banana pup removal

Hi! I have a dwarf cavendish with two pups sprouting. The main plant is like 8 or 9 inches high excluding the new leaf unrolling, and each pup is maybe an inch or two. I couldn't really find much about pup removal for plants this small.

I would like to save the pups and start new plants, is it too soon to remove them? how big should the mother and pups be before doing so?

I would let them grow a little more. Next time you put it in a larger pot if they have some roots, it would be easy to separate the pups with it out of the pot.

That's what I was thinking... which leads me to my next question: how do i know when to repot? this thing puts out a new leaf every week or faster. biggest size i have on hand is 2gal. I know with palms you don't wanna go too big, but those also don't grow as fast.

EDIT: it's in ~1/2 gallon right now

When I get to it sometimes on my plants. If it's not growing out of the pot or too large and blowing over it's good. I take some of mine out of a gal pot and put in the ground, that's the biggest pot I can find.

I wouldn't re-pot until Spring, right now she's growing, and if you were to transplant I'd be afraid of transplant shock.

I ended up transplanting because it sucked the tiny container dry like every day. I gave it a go with the suckers. They didn’t make it. I’ll wait a little longer next time. Thanks all!

Playing this game again. The sucker is much taller this time. Do you guys think I should give it more time?

I would, give it more time for the root system to grow more IMHO

I agree with everyone else.....more time so the plant will mature.
The pup is not hurting anything while it matures in the container connected to the main plant.

I let mine get pretty large and then use a sharp knife to sever the plant from the parent.
I just sever it, I do not remove it from the pot. There are now two plants growing separately in the same pot still developing their root systems.
I let the plant mature even further before I remove it from the container with all the roots now mature.
The pup is removed as a plug of soil and roots

You will then backfill the void left from the pup with new soil and the process starts over.

Your new pup/plant now is established and you can repot in another container with absolute minimum disturbance of the root ball guaranteeing a successful pup removal.

Click on the photos to see more possible separation ideas which could be helpful.

Huh, that makes it look really easy. Just need to cut deep enough

I think it’s unrelated to the sucker but does anyone know what’s going on here? Two leaves at once and the one is reallly skinny.
